So from reading past topics, I know many OOSers were offered in state tuition rates.
As an SC native, I know our graduates can get the Palmetto, Life, or Hope lottery scholarships.
What’s odd to me is how Clemson does it, compared to other colleges my son applied to. Most of them had separate scholarship applications that had to be filled out…whether it was for a general scholarship or a department-specific scholarship. A few of the other colleges my son was accepted to gave preliminary scholarships offers in his acceptance letter (like "you will get $xxxx.00 in scholarships and potentially more announced later). Clemson didn’t do any of this.
So historically, what is their scholarship situation like? Do they not offer many scholarships? Is it mostly merit-based, or mostly need based?
Anyone have any feedback on this? Keep in mind, I am asking specifically about Clemson’s in-house monies. I know about Pell grants, outside sources for scholarships, loans, SC lottery funds, etc. But does Clemson offer many scholarships? What has been your experience??
My son was offered an out of state merit scholarship in his admission letter. It was the maximum OOS scholarship, but that is no longer quite equal to an in-state tuition match. As far as I can tell unless you qualify for another specif scholarship like National Scholars, Lyceum, etc, that is probably it in terms of merit based funds.
I’m not sure how the in-state scholarships work, but for the OOS I think they handle them the way they do (no separate application ) because they are pretty much automatic. If you have the right stats you get the scholarship.
We are instate and my son received his merit offer with his admission offer in Dec. it gave a range and did not include his Palmetto Fellows scholarship. You can go on the scholarship page and look at Freshman scholarship section to get an idea of what your child may be eligible for .
My OOS son was offered a total of $68K, but that doesn’t cover the total tuition bill for an OOS student. He did apply for Lyceum, but unless he is offered that AND something else, Clemson will be out of reach. His stats are excellent, top 1% in the nation. Clemson attracts very high quality students. He would love to be at Clemson, but we have been very open about economics. We applied to 12 schools, all excellent in our mind. Clemson is one of our favorites.
As other posters have mentioned, it appears the top OOS recruiting scholarships are coming up about $3000 short of instate annual tuition.
That makes the net price including room, board and books around $26k per year. Great school in a beautiful part of the country, but if you can get that scholarship from Clemson, you can beat that by around $9k per year at South Carolina, and your net price at other state flagships in the south and Midwest could be half of Clemson.
Clemson was the top choice for us but we could not justify the cost difference.
