NROTC Major

Anyone that received a NROTC scholarship (Marine Option please specify), I'm trying to figure out what to major in, and it would be helpful to know what the selection board is interested, or in need of. Thank you in advance.

Anyone in NROTC?

I did it for a year before going to USNA. If you think I can help, I'll do my best to answer any of your questions.

I have a Navy option scholarship, so I can help you out if you need it. For Navy options you get extra points if you put down a technical major. I am pretty sure it does no matter for Marine options though.

Wow just what I like to see...how to cheat your way into the system, rather than earn your spot honestly! So you hate your major over the next 4 years, what are you going to do then? Or is the plan to just change it as soon as you have the scholarship in hand?

How about being honest on the application! If someone has to tell you what to major in, maybe a little sole searching needs to be done. If you are undecided, then put undecided. There is this little thing called integrity on honor.

What is your problem Nativetexan? He asked what the selection board likes, and I told him. Calm down a little bit, I'm sure it is easy for you to go around blabbing about abstract qualities such as honor and integrity on an internet forum. And for the record, I put down political science as my major.

In my particular situation, I had always wanted to go Aero Engineering. I told them that at my NROTC scholarship interview. Later in Senior year, I changed my mind and told them Chemistry (after getting the scholarship).

After a few weeks with a chem professor no one could understand who seemed incapable of communicated a coherent idea, I changed to History and stayed that way for the rest of the year.

Now I'm a Systems Engineering major at USNA, and I intend to stay that way.

Bouncing around isn't bad or wrong, it just shows that you haven't found something that suites you. Several of my friends have done the same...not just with majors, but with schools.

Marine: If you want to go History, Poly sci, or rocket surgery, tell the Marine Corps what you want. Out of 15 or so Marine Options at the UW NROTC unit, there might have been one technical degree among them. I wouldn't fret about wanting a History degree and the scholarship. If you're qualified, they'll take you.

marine4life - last year our kiddo had an MRTOC option scholarship and never did she have to specify her major up front. She mentioned her interests which included Arabic and she was very strong in math/sciences - in the interview process it simply wasn't an issue. The Marines down at MCRD here in San Diego were more intersted in the physical aptitudes and examples of leadership demonstrated than anything else. She got into UCLA, with an easy option to switch to UCSD and even George Washington University - which were also available. So I don't know if it is your school choices, or your local situation - but in our case she never selected any specific major. In the end she turned down the scholarship to go USNA.

Thanks for all the help.
