I'm sure i'm like many of you out there. Pursuing an NROTC scholarship in parallel to seeking an appointment to USNA. I'd like to hear from others in this situation. Have you gotten word on your scholarship yet? I've been waiting a while myself and still haven't heard. I have a nomination and triple-Q status for Navy. Good luck to all candidates.

Hey Boss! Congrats on your nomination and QQQ status! I bet you'll hear something from Navy soon.

I received an ISD (Immediate Scholarship Decision), so I'm good to go if that's what I decide I want to do. So far, here are my options:

Appointment to USNA
Accepted to Harvard EA
Likely letter to Yale (unless I really screw up, I'm in)

I'm still waiting to hear from Princeton, Stanford and UNC. What are you thinking of majoring in? I was planning on engineering, but I'm now thinking I may want to go to law school and become a JAG officer.

Let us know when you get the great news! :)

Wow that's very impressive! That's like having to choose among steak, lobster, or chicken cordon blue! Just curious what are your stats(academic that is! just kiddin') Good luck on whatever you decide and thanks for the nice thoughts.
As far as major, I will likely go either political science or engineering.

Boss:
My daughter was told last year that the ROTC people meet once a month. Say, you have everything in for your app by the first meeting in Sept (or aug...can't remember), you are reviewed. They take like 10% of each review group. If you aren't selected, you are bumped to the next month's review. This goes on until either you are rejected or offered a scholarship. The whole point was that the earlier you have everything in, the better your chances of receiving the scholarship. But, I would say if you are QQQ'd at the Academy, you should get a NROTC scholarship (depending on what schools you selected). My daughter got her first choice of NROTC but also had everything in by the end of August last year. Hope that helps. I also think you have a good shot if triple Q'd of getting an appointment too.
NAPS05mom
P.S. Boy, this year sure is easier on the waiting side of the fence. :)

I received an NROTC 4yr Scholarship about a week ago. It was first posted at the NROTC site.

My son had everything in for NROTC in September and heard in October that he had a scholarship and his first choice school. He is QQQ'd with a nomination for USNA but needs an eye waiver and will probably be waiting a long time to find out. Just received his first acceptance to a civilian college and two great scholarships. The choices will be tough and you have to hope that you have as many options as possible. Interested in Political Science / History / International Relations.

I got my NROTC Scholarship the beginning of this month (saw it online). I don't have a nomination to USNA or a QQQ letter, but I do have an appointment to the US Merchant Marine Academy....so USMMA or Northwestern if I get in?

I am waiting to hear from VA-Tech,I was accepted to VMI, I received two nominations to the USMMA but I didn't do an early application so I still haven't heard anything, I did do an early application to the USNA, I have a presidential nomination. I wear glasses. So considering only 100 will be picked from the presidentail nomination pool and I needed a waiver for my eyes, oh well. I also applied for an NSA full scholarship plus empolyment, I don't have a clue how long that will take. But on the Bright side. I received an early appointment to the USCGA. Considering the USCGA is more selective than the USNA, I am pretty happy! My mother continues to collect letters for my high school scrapbook.

Boss, here are my stats:

Wow that's quite a resume! Maybe we should make you CNO and skip the preliminaries! Just kidding you will definitely go far! Good luck!

lol, I wouldn't mind that Boss! :)

Took the day off today to finish up my essays and get them off for the Presidential Scholars Nomination. Taking a BIG break now. I am sooooooo tired of essays. I'm not even sure if I have a real shot at this since there are others with a perfect 1600 I'm competing with. Oh well, I'm already committed, so guess I'll continue on. Only another couple of paragraphs and I'm finished! YES!!!

davygravy3, sorry to hear about USNA, but it sounds like you have some other great options. Congrats to you and Coastie on the NROTC scholarship!

Boss, I am seeking an appointment to USNA and pursuing a NROTC scholarship, too. I just had my interview with the recruiter last week for the scholarship and feel it went really well. The lady said that I would not hear anything for at least two weeks though.

I have a nomination in hand for USNA & USMA but I'm still waiting to be QQQ'd. I'd think that you'd be getting word from Navy soon, though, Boss. Don't know if this post helped at all, but good luck with everything.

Hahahaha, have fun waiting....NROTC was probably the most confusing post-application time ever. Be aware though, getting the ROTC scholarship to a school of your choice doesn't mean you are necessarily going to get into that school. I know a couple of firends that this happened to. If you are the high-school (and college) party type...go ROTC, its killing my friends here not to be able to drink especially those over 21.

oh, and davygravy, i am sure you have heard this...but Merchant Marine is a SWEET deal. the whole cross commissioning thing really works to your benefit in that situation.

I recieved a NROTC scholarship to The Ohio State University approx 1 week ago.

buffalo you said " Be aware though, getting the ROTC scholarship to a school of your choice doesn't mean you are necessarily going to get into that school. I know a couple of firends that this happened to."

In speaking with the Chief, who was processing the applications for my area, I said,"I don't know if I have a real great shot of getting into Northwestern, but I don't find out till April. Will I be able to switch to U of I by then or no? Will my scholarship be lost?"

His reply was, "if you got the scholarship to that unit it means your very likely to get in, and very rarely does the person not get into the school. They don't award phantom scholarships."

There is some haggling. But I wont say he said that. The board has to fit the demands of the ROTC unit and the Navy, the schools have to comply to a certain extent.

"if you got the scholarship to that unit it means your very likely to get in, and very rarely does the person not get into the school. They don't award phantom scholarships."

school admission and scholarship award are entirely different-independent of each other. I do not believe that if you are awarded a scholarship to a specific school that you will necessarily get into that school

Thanks sempergumby, couldn't say it much better.

Do you think the Navy is going to start assigning kids to units who they do not think will get into the college? If that's the case why wouldn't they just say to us,"you have the scholarship, get into the college, let us know, if there is still space available will put you there."

I think it's one of those things though that we aren't suppose to know...or something like that.

Trust me, being awarded a scholarship has no bearing on school admission. Scholarships are often awarded before college admission decisions are made. The recruiter usually advises the applicant to choose colleges that he/she will most likely be admitted to and in the event a scholarship recipient does not get into the school in which the scholarship was awarded, well then you choose another school(s) and are put on a waitlist.

I disagree. From what I've seen of the Army ROTC process, the Professor of Military Science who runs the local ROTC program has a lot of influence on admissions. In some cases, members of the admissions office participate in ROTC scholarship committee interviews. Hard to believe that the committee would award a scholarship when the committee member on admissions is saying the student won't be admitted. There is definitely a symbiotic relationship between ROTC and the colleges - ROTC scholarship money is money that the colleges don't have to use out of their own financial aid packages and I'm sure the DoD funds some facilities that assist the college.
Buffalo - I'd be interested in which ROTC programs awarded the scholarships and your friends didn't get in. Did they do well in their first semester grades?
