I applied for Chinese, Korean, and Hindi summer programs. Do you think having a lot of experiences going abroad will hurt my chances ? Turned in my application last minute and didn’t have time to edit as much as I’d like… really nervous. :(

Hello! I applied for Russia summer, but I am trying not to get my hopes up about making it, since I am just a freshman…

P.S. It isn’t working! :-S

@fromUSA2Russia

I’m in the exact same boat as you. I’ve known about this program for about two years and this was the first year I am able to apply. I know my chances are slim because they wanna give the opportunity to seniors and freshman are so young they must not be responsible…

I turned 15 literally like two days ago and studying abroad/languages have always been my passion so I hope they see that through my essays and letters. I read all 20 pages of the 2014-2015 forum so I’m glad there is one for this year!

I only applied for the Korean summer because I’m really not interested in anything else. I just think that I will definitely work harder since I love the Korean culture so much that makes little sense to travel somewhere else. If I don’t get in this year, I will apply every year till I get in. I’m also hoping for a gap year in Korea as well. Where are you guys from and where are you applying to study?

Wow! We are so alike! (Except that I am passionate about Russia) I have always wanted to go to Russia, learn Russian, and live there as an adult! My friend heard about the NSLI-Y program and then immediately called me, because she knew how much I love anything that has to do with Russia. That was the night before the deadline for applications… I stayed up ALL night and got it in at 3:00 in central time… #:-S I also adore traveling to other countries, (I just went to Israel with my mom!) and I have started learning Russian on my own. I am horrible at writing essays and letters, so I don’t know if they will see my absolute passion for Russia… [-O< I have read all the pages for the 2014-2015, and the one for 2012-2013 also… I have also read all the blogs and YouTube videos from Russia (and all the Korea, India, Arabic, Chinese, and Turkey ones too! Just for fun because all the programs have slight similarities!) I have stayed up so many nights researching since I found out!

I also just applied for Russia, because that is what I am so passionate about, RUSSIA!!! I know that I am mature enough, because I have traveled a lot and I am an older child of five, but being a freshmen, I don’t know if they will accept me… I am also positive that if I don’t get accepted, I will try again all the other years, and possibly through college too (the college one). I am also hoping for a gap year either in between my junior and senior year, or after my senior year. I am from Illinois, what about you?

P.S. I am also glad that there is a thread for this year too! We can all be crazy worriers together… :-SS

Btw, will turn 15 on April Fools Day, so I just made the cutoff!

Hey everybody! I’m applying for 1. Morocco summer 2. India summer and 3. Russia summer! I am so excited! Good luck to everyone who applied!

Quick question-does anybody know when the students accepted for Morocco summer leave? When in June or when in July? Thank you!! >:D<

@Obraynerd I’ve traveled abroad too, and I think that will show the judges that you are mature enough to handle an opportunity like this. It also proves that you realize the respect you need to give everybody and everything when traveling. In other words, having already traveled abroad proves that you can take on a trip like this. No worries, and good luck!!

I don’t know when they will leave this year, but in 2013 they arrived at PDO on June 16. In 2012 they left on July 1. I just found the information from past blogs that said the date of either the PDO or when they left their house. Morocco looks amazing, and I hope you get accepted! Have you studied Arabic in the past?

Hey guys! I’m applying for the Korean Summer program.
@afrucht and @OGPStudent: last year, they had 3,600 applicants and 625 finalists… So that’s about a 17% admission rate.
Best of luck to everyone! I’m waiting for December in great anticipation :)

Korea looks like a great experience! I have learned a tiny bit of Korean, because I am nearly a blackbelt in Tae-Kwon-Do. I really hope to travel there sometime… It is on my long list of places to visit! :)

Hopefully we will be part of the 17%! :-SS

Best of luck to you too! What grade are you in? :)

@fromUSA2Russia
Hey, I’m a junior!
Wow, black belt? That’s awesome! I wish I had some sort of interesting skill like that. If I’m not mistaken, the Korean alumni mentioned learning tae-kwon-do while they were there! Fingers crossed that we make the 17% cut. I’m sure that someone here will make it though.

Well, almost a black belt… (I wish June would come faster… ) Just wondering, what made you interested in Korea? The more I research it the cooler it looks! Yes, I saw the previous Korea participants attempting some kicks and sparring… That would be amazing if we all were accepted! (Still trying unsuccessfully to not get my hopes up,as a freshie… ) Right now I am just hoping to be a semi-finalist and get to go through an interview… It would help me in later years!

How did you like doing the essays? I literally had one day to write mine, so they probably aren’t very good… Which last essay did you pick? I did the how did I change in the past year because I couldn’t think of any incidents that happened… (brain freezes happened a lot that day… )

[-O< + :-SS + I-) + food + sports + SCHOOL = equals me right now…

@fromUSA2Russia Don’t worry about being a freshman!! It might work against you, but, heck, it might even be an ADVANTAGE when they see how mature you are and how passionate you are even though you’re young! You’re applying for summer right? I have a friend who was accepted for Chinese year last year as a freshman.

Guys. It’s the 8th. Only 3-weeks-ish until semi-finalist notifications will probably start!!

Yes, I am applying for summer. Wow, all the blogs had people who were way older than me… That is reassuring, thanks!

What grade are you in?

I know, only around three weeks!!! But I still have the form to sign and send in, and my mom hasn’t started her recommendation… I can’t wait! [-O<

@fromUSA2Russia

I’m in 11th, applying for Turkish year!! Yeah, the majority of people are older, but I think that reflects, in part, the fact that more older people tend to apply…and also because people who’ve taken more high school classes tend to write better essays and probably have more interview experience than younger ones. But if your essays and interview are good - you shouldn’t be rejected just because of your age :)

I’m super excited. I just hope I make it to the semifinalist stage!!!

@evan241

Awesome! I really hope you are accepted!

Ditto! I am so excited for when they announce the semi-finalists! I also hope that my essays were good enough to get me to an interview. I have been spending almost an hour per day studying Russian, which isn’t a bad thing… If I don’t get in, it will help for next year! But hopefully I can use it this summer!!!

RUSSIAN GRAMMAR is complicated!!! But it is really fun and interesting.

Have you studied Turkish before?

@fromUSA2Russia

Hopefully I’ll get to semis because my essays were good, I thought. I worked really hard on them so hopefully that work pays off!!

I haven’t studied Turkish before, and I thought about starting now but I’m already studying Portuguese on my own and struggling to maintain my Chinese, so I thought Turkish would be a little much to add at the moment when I don’t have anyone to practice with! Plus, I’m applying for several study abroad scholarships, so I don’t quite know WHERE I’d be going next year, IF I get accepted to one haha

Are you applying to any of the other government scholarships (CBYX/YES)?

You know Chinese??? I am 50% Chinese! My dad speaks fluent Chinese, but he only speak it when he meets other Chinese people… Just wondering, why did you choose to study in Turkey?

No, I have just found out about the whole learning abroad concept, but I think I will apply to more programs next year… I though that it said in the NSLI application that you could only do two government funded scholarships??? I am definitely interested though for next year, but I wouldn’t know which program… Do you know of any good scholarship programs that you would recommend?

If you are applying to a lot of programs, which one would you pick if you got into all of them?

:bz - I really wonder why this is in the smileys… :P

@evan241

Sorry I forgot to tag you!!!

Now you can get a notification

Sorry! :)
