Hi guys, I'm creating this thread so applicants can talk about the NSLI-Y application process together :)

What program/s are you applying for? I turned in my app last week for 1. Turkish year 2. Turkish summer 3. Chinese year

Hey! I am applying for Korean academic year as my first and only choice. I applied last year but wasn’t accepted so hopefully this year is the year!
Good luck to you both.

I’m so nervous! I’ve been procrastinating on my application but probably 1. Russian summer 2. Turkish summer and 3. Arabic summer?

Heyo guys! I’m still doing my essays, since I only found the organization on Friday. I’m applying to go to 1. Russia for the entire year, 2. Russia for the summer and 3. Anywhere! Are ya’ll nervous?

Hey guys! I’m applying for 1. India summer, 2. Tajik summer and 3. Turkey summer. I was so excited to find a current forum! Good luck to you all.

I’ve had my app turned in for a couple of weeks now, so I’m pretty relaxed at the moment Any other Turkish year applicants out there? Anyone planning on applying for any other exchange scholarships?

If there’s anyone out there who’s still working on their essays and would like someone to take a look at them/proofread them/whatever, let me know.

I turned in my app last week! I applied for 1. Turkish Year 2. Chinese Year 3. Any
I was going to apply to CBYX but I am a day too old -_-

I didn’t know this was such a competitive program Super scared I won’t get in.

Another Turkish year person!!! Almost all of the people seem to be summer applicants and Chinese/Korean applicants. Hindi and Turkish seem to be the least popular options. However, that means they have relatively few scholarships.

I believe there are 7 Turkish Year students this year. So we’re thinking that there are probably 6-8 spaces. You’re not a summer alum by chance?

@evan241 How do you know how many student there are? And wow, that is not that many spaces. I am not an alum so I probably won’t get in sadly. I really wanted to take a gap year before I started college to go abroad and this is the only program that really interested me.

@girlintheworld I found a picture of the group on someone’s blog and counted, haha. I think there were seven. I’m not either…I know of two-three summer alum that are applying…They will probably get in…But there will be some spots left, don’t give up hope!!

Ugh I don’t know how to edit my post…But I was just going to add that I found out that there will be about 1300 semifinalists and that interviews will be between mid December and early February. Probably the same as last year

Hello! I am applying for the summer Arabic Program for my first choice, with my second and third choices beingthe summer Turkish and Russian programs. This is my first year applying for NSLI-Y, and I am junior. Does anyone know the number accepted into these programs?

@evan241
Haha, I hope we both get in! I am a senior so hopefully that will give me an advantage. When do we start hearing back from them?

@girlintheworld We should start hearing about our semifinalist statuses in December I think!

NSLIY and College…December is going to be one stressful and nerve wracking month.

I know that last year some people started hearing back December 1st…But it was on a rolling basis by state, I think. Some people didn’t hear until mid-December.

I just submitted my application for China Summer last week! I am feeling pretty good, but I’ve heard it’s pretty competitive. I hope putting down only one preference will help convey my passion for Chinese. Does anyone know how many students they’ll be taking this year?

@OGPStudent
This is a rough estimate but…around 600, I’m pretty sure.

I applied for the Chinese Academic Year! I mentioned how I had gone to China with my school in June but now I’m wondering if that hurt my application. @girlintheworld I really want to take a gap year too!!
