NSLI-Y 2015-2016

@fromUSA2Russia

I have two brothers and one stepsister. I’m actually the oldest in my family. ( I’m a twin with my brother. Technically, I’m the oldest by one minute~ :)>- ) My younger brother is 13 but he’s really short so everyone thinks he is ten. Lastly, my little sister just turned 10 this August. When is your birthday? You are a freshman but I don’t know if you have an early birthday or if you are turning 15 right before we are supposed to leave. My birthday just passed, it was the 4th of November.

I don’t do any sports but I really enjoy soccer and I think I’m pretty good at it. I can’t do sports because I have a knee problem. My kneecap is extremely loose so usually three times a month my knee will pop out of it’s socket. It only hurts when it happens but at the ending of September I dislocated it really badly and was on crutches for a month. I’m off now and at physical therapy. I dislocated it when running because I joined cross country… Sadly I need to start sticking to my clubs. I love clubs and I’m in 4 at the moment. Every Wednesday my school has a late start so instead of starting at 8 in the morning we start at 9 in the morning. Between that extra time I go to sign language club. Sign language club is super cool and I love communicating with the deaf kids because they are the cutest/sweetest thing in the world. I also go to foreign language club. It is a lot different than I thought it was going to be. We really don’t talk about cultures or learn about other languages… really we just go out to a restaurant every two weeks but I guess it is better than nothing. I’m also in Drama but our winter play preparations haven’t started yet. Lastly, the club that basically describes me, speech team. I don’t know if you know what it is because you are home schooled and not a lot of schools have a speech team anyway… Speech team is a club where you get up before the sun on SATURDAYS and stay in a school until the sun sets and when you are there you recite speeches and act with no props or costumes. It doesn’t sound like much fun but it really is. I love it! My team is great and last Saturday we were the top school at out tournament and I placed second in my category for Info. ( I had to recite my own informative speech. Mine was on Bilingualism and how it affects our mental aging process. ) Also… :x the cute boys from the other school are quite a nice view B-)

My dad really wants me to go and he was the one that stayed up with me the night before the due date helping me review the application and all my essays. He thinks it is a great opportunity and he studied abroad in Japan in college so he’s like “Why Not!” my mom on the other hand, she’s really worried about me going, She still let me apply and I think if I get in, she will see how hard I worked and see that this is for me. [-O<

My friends think it’s weird that I wanna spend my summer in a foreign country but they understand my passion. I can vouch for them and say that they think I’m annoying when I never stop talking about Korea and my plans and everything XD lol :smiley:

Sadly, I haven’t studied or traveled abroad anywhere. The farthest Iv’e been from IL would be NY. I live really close to the chicago area. Like 30 min on a day with good traffic. ^^

Question time! lol I guess this is what we are going to write to ask questions.
I can’t really think of anything to be honest… but I never got your name. It’s kinda weird to not be addressing anyone but I understand if you don’t want to tell me. A first letter would be cool. My name is Emma :-j

@dory0814

Hi My name is Emma! So you are applying for NSLIY? What country and what year are you in school?

@ZealousStudent

Haha but I totally understand, Kdramas were the reason why I was introduced into Korea. It would be amazing if we both got in because we would get to know each other really well on here and then we could go and explore Korea together!! lol I found about the program when I was in 7th grade. I saw some video blogs from a past Korea participant named elaine or however you spell it. Do you know who I’m talking about it? :))

@fromUSA2Russia‌

I’ve been doing cyber school since 6th grade!! I love it!

GUYS. Somebody mentioned in the NSLI-Y facebook group that they wouldn’t be surprised if semi-finalist notifications began earlier this year than last year, considering the app was due a bit earlier. I’m doubting that though - my guess is that notifications will start December 1st!

There are so many people applying for Korea this year! Good luck to everyone ^^

Guys, I get so behind when I leave for places… :stuck_out_tongue:

@EmmaPotts‌

Wow, that must be hard to not be able to run or play sports… :confused: I hope your knee feels better really soon!

I really wish that I could join a club… I don’t know if clubs would work in homeschool. :stuck_out_tongue: It would just be my sisters and me! :slight_smile: WAIT, YOU KNOW SIGN LANGUAGE!!! :slight_smile: :slight_smile: :slight_smile: I have learned a lot of sign language over the summer by YouTube videos or looking at sites! I LOVE sign language!!! I am a little rusty right now because I haven’t practiced any since the summer… This is SOOOO crazy how we are alike, because I also love saying speeches and talking in front of people! People have always told me that I am weird for not having any stage fright! But talking to people is right up my alley, so I don’t mind it at all (I actually like doing it!) NOW I REALLY WISH THAT I COULD JOIN A CLUB!!! :confused:

Yeah, I have gone on and on about Russia to my friends too… Lol But I was so glad that the friend I was talking to a week ago seemed (who knows if she actually was… :slight_smile: ) to be interested! :stuck_out_tongue:

My first letter of my name is K… :-j I sent you a PM of my name… :stuck_out_tongue: Check your inbox!!! :slight_smile: I like your name, it sounds so pretty! :slight_smile:

Wow, I really think that you have an amazing chance at being accepted and even more of becoming a semi-finalist!!! :slight_smile: I hope you do both!!! :stuck_out_tongue:

Question time!!! :slight_smile: lol, I don’t really know where this started… :stuck_out_tongue: This will get harder and harder as we go on, I think… :stuck_out_tongue: hmmmm… Are you a night owl or a morning bird? I am more of a night owl, but partially a morning bird because I usually wake up at 6:30 on a normal day (sometimes earlier, sometimes later), but the on weekends I only sleep until 7:00-7:30ish… :slight_smile: I only require around 6 hours of sleep, but my mom,always wants me to get way more than that.my while family goes to bed before me, sometimes more that two hours before me! I always stay up by either studying, reading, reading exchange blogs, researching career options, writing here (which has the most common thing lately… :slight_smile: ), studying Russian, studying ASL (at least that was what I was doing in the summer), or just watching sport replays! I usually go to bed anywhere from 10:00 - 1:00… (The 1 o’clock bed time is an example of extreme cases like the night before the application was dues and I had only know about NSLI-Y for 12 hours… ) What is your favorite color? Mine is orange, but I really like blue also… I like orange mostly because it is unique, and pretty at the same time. :stuck_out_tongue:

I CANNOT BELIVE THAT WE ARE SO ALIKE!!! :slight_smile: I really, really, really, really want to meet you! Hopefully we both become semi-finalists and have interviews!!! :slight_smile: :slight_smile: :slight_smile: :slight_smile:

You can PM me your replies and we can talk on that! :stuck_out_tongue: (see below for details… :slight_smile: Okay that really felt like a commercial… :stuck_out_tongue: )

MODERATOR’S NOTE: The purpose of this thread is to discuss the NSLI-Y application process, not to have a text exchange between two people; if you wish to continue your conversation, please use PM. Thank you.

@exoplanet99‌

Good luck to you too!

@evan241‌

Cyber school sounds like fun! I really liked being homeschooled today, because I was job shadowing from 9:00- 2:00! Though now I have to catch up on my school… :frowning: :confused:

I hope that they announce the semi-finalists early!!! I really can’t wait, even though I am preparing myself for the worst… :confused: I HOPE WE ALL BECOME SEMI-FINALISTS!!! :slight_smile: :slight_smile: :slight_smile:

P.S. - P.M. me please!!! :slight_smile: :slight_smile: :)

@skieurope‌

Sorry!!! I just figured out how to use a PM… I will definitely use that now!

@EmmaPotts‌
Yes! This is my first year applying for NSLI-Y and I’m really nervous, but mostly excited! I’m applying for the Hindi summer program + I’m a junior this year in school. This would be my only chance to go unless I did a year program because I’m going to Vietnam in 2016! :smiley:

Hindi, that is super unique, and Vietnam in 2016? wow they are kinda different. Why did you choose Hindi? And are you going to Vietnam with a different program? :wink:

@EmmaPotts‌ I applied for Hindi because I just LOVE the culture and the language and everything about India. My sister is adopted from Vietnam, and I’ve been there once already so just my family is going there to explore.

@dory0814

That’s cool. I was just wondering because I didn’t think NSLI-Y gave opportunities to go to Vietnam. Well, I hope you get into the program, I will be rooting for you!

YFU used to have a full year scholarship to Vietnam, but I think the last year they had it was 2012-2013 or 2013-2014. If y’all are interested in summer scholarships, check out YFU scholarships - they have full summer scholarships to Finland and Japan! The only thing is that the deadlines are coming up (the deadlines are all December 1st).

Is anyone else here applying for a year program? Summer applicants definitely seem to outnumber year applicants by a lot.

@evan241‌

I am just applying for the summer program, but I am interested in doing the academic year program once I get a little bit older than a Freshmen! :slight_smile:

Yes, there are A LOT more summer applicants than year applicants!

Hey guys! So I’m curious, were your 250 word essays in essay-format? Or did you write them in a paragraph?

@‌dory0814 - Mine were in essay format (without long intros/conclusions because…word limit) but I know someone who wrote one in list format and someone who wrote them in a paragraph.

Guys. I’m so excited. NSLI-Y!

@evan241
@USA2Russia
Yeah, I would love to experience a year program but as a Freshman… I don’t think that would go very well with my parents either XD

And I’m so excited for the notifications to start coming out! I’m trying to not get my hopes up but it is really hard since everyday of my life is filled to the brim with Korea this and Korea that >~<

@evan241‌ ok I literally have been panicking because mine were in paragraph form because word limit. I hope they’re ok!! :smiley:

IM EXCITED TOO.

@dory0814 - Don’t worry! They won’t read your essays and say “This one is not getting in because of her essay format!” I don’t think they care how you format your essays (I mean, the limit was 250 words) as long as you didn’t give them some weird, confusing, distracting format.
