china is my second choice

Does anyone know exactly what date everyone was notified last year? Because I’ve applied for a gap semester/year, the later they notify, the harder it will be for me to make arrangements with the school I decide on before I have to commit to a particular school on May 1. If my first choice doesn’t allow deferment or needs some kind of information on NSLI before they decide to permit me to defer, the longer they wait to tell us, the less time I have to put it all in place. I don’t really want to ask for permission before I know that NSLI has accepted me - don’t think it’s wise in the college admission process to tell them before I’m even accepted that I don’t plan to come for a year!!

I don’t even care WHERE I’m going, but the earlier they can tell me IF I’m going, the better. Not because I’m anxious to find out - although I AM!!! - it’s more about the logistics.

Oh geez, what a mess you’ve gotten yourself into Jdh. They started notifying people by April 14 last year. Prepare for what you can (fill out as much of any application necessary) and then brace for whatever is to come. That way, you’ll be ready for anything.

Yep, it is a mess. I guess I will have to call and see if they can at least tell me IF I’m going a little early. I can’t be the only person ever to have this problem.

Good luck with that. I’m in that mess as well. I’m going to college in the UK and I need to get a student visa. However, if I will be gone all summer, I will need to know so I can get my visa for the UK now. In addition to that, I would have to get a visa for whatever country I got selected for. It is going to create a logistical mess!

The logistics seem complicated, moreso because I’m kind of in the same boat. I have two trips planned out of the country between now and the fall. One country requires a visa, one does not, but the whole passport issue will be interesting. Logistically, I need to plan ahead as far as possible, because obviously I will need to have passport in hand a lot over the summer and will have to be strategic in the timing for visas etc., so that I have my passport when I need it and still have enough time to secure the necessary visas while I’m in the US. Crazy!! Should be fun!!

Well, it never hurts to fetch a passport first and thn deal with visas if you at least are positive about heading to another country.

I have never been so grateful in being a freshman in highschool as I am now. It’s a whole lot less nervewracking. Studying overseas as part of the college course might be fun though. I’ve always wanted to ask for a biscuit as dessert and chips as the side to a meal.

Hi everyone. In case you didn’t know, the State Dept website has updated the number of scholarships available for each country. The number of summer slots for China has DOUBLED, while Korean and Turkish have gone down. I am thinking that perhaps they have gone through many of the applications and adjusted for the level of interest. None of the semester or year program numbers have changed.

Any of you who applied for Chinese summer should be thrilled - your chances of being selected just doubled.

That’s great for those who applied for Chinese!!

Yeah, that’s really good news!

Also, I just got an email today that NSLI would be notifying people via email on a rolling basis in April.

Thanks for the valuable information Jdh. I feel as though that’s bad for me, as I’m really leaning towards Korea, but Russia is up there (with many slots), and China is my third choice. Good luck to everyone, April is almost upon us!

Did everyone get the update e-mail?!

Yes, I did. I think the staff is getting tired of calls, so they decided to head some of us off! I sure hope I’m in the first wave of notifications, one way or the other. I need to commit to a college! Arghh!

I wonder how the message will be relayed, alpha order, country/language, state ahh

They did say “on a rolling basis”, so I think it’s kind of like a first come first serve sort of thing, where once they receive everything required from a semi-finalist, they review it and decide. Also, it’s possible they’re trying to release news around the same time so people don’t start freaking out if someone near them has already been accepted an they hadn’t received anything yet…but who knows…

Someone posted this on Cultures-Shocked

That is cutting it pretty close for me, but obviously there’s not a thing I can do about it! I will just have to be ready the minute the decision comes. I’m more worried about the passport issues than the college issue at this point. I absolutely cannot give NSLI my passport for the summer. I am going out of the country twice, and have to have it. I don’t really understand about them holding the passport until we leave, unless you don’t send it to them until right before the trip. When I went to China three years ago, we turned in our passports to have the visas issued and got them back within a week. And you’d think that a program run by the State Department might have the ability to get visas quickly, right?

Anyway, I am just excited to find out. Gap year is a long shot, but hey, someone has to get it!!

Now I am wondering where I saw the post about them holding the passports for an extended period. I can’t seem to find it. I’m probably looking right at it but not seeing it. Can anyone help me out?

Ctrl+F? Most likely somewhere in the FAQ sheet. April is less than a week away. -mental fidgeting- Thanks Sore anyways for the info.

I never heard this about them holding your passport…This may sound stupid (I haven’t been out of the country much…yet! :P), but why can’t you just send a copy of the page they need?
