NSLI-Y Program.

gee thanks guys:) that makes me feel a little better to know I’m not the only one. Chewy, I think I may be in the same boat as you because I marked the summer program as my first choice, but that I would consider any scholarship. I’m just kinda worried that they will give me a semester becuase my school may not allow it. I would definately say yes to the full year though.

Was information about a conference call included in your acceptance letter?

@sandarlove Awesome!!! Have you had a conference call yet? Also, did they tell you whether you are staying in Alexandria or Cairo??

Hey watchmesoar, i didnt get anything about a conference call in my acceptance letter, maybe they tell you about it once you accept the offer?

I got into Arabic (summer) too! Although I’m going to Morocco, not Egypt. I haven’t heard anything about a conference call, either, so sandarlove was probably right.
BTW, it seems that the deadline to accept is April 30, so alternates probably won’t hear anything until after that. Just thought someone might be interested.
Also, if you’re wondering who I am, I’ve been checking this forum daily, religiously, for the past week or two. I got a lot of support from you guys, even if I wasn’t part of the conversation, so I just wanted to say thanks for that.

@ nellsbells: nope nothing about a call yet and in my letter it just said alexandria or cairo so i guess we have to wait on that one too. I’M SO EXCITED!

Congrats to the latest batch of NSLI-Y (the people there pronounceit like "Nestl

So what kinda questions were asked?

Chewydog: I have two, but for whatever reason there was a squirrel on my window and it wouldn’t go away so my dogs were just barking away at it haha. Yea the beeping sounds I think were people either coming in or out of the conference call or muting and unmuting their phone.
OH nestle… yea that caught me off guard, I was like What? the chocolate? What?!
Are you on the year or semester program?
I actually wanted to ask a couple of questions like if we got sick was it recommended to go to ER or a personal family doctor or clinic? (for the insurance and stuff)

Hairydogeat: Alot of questions were asked that I never even thought of asking… which was a good thing. Things were asked about stipends, cellphones, insurance, classes, school, etc.

I’m in the semester program. I’d assume we’d go to some hospital if we were sick because NSLI-Y does provide some insurance (I believe this was in the FAQ section)

I found it. Here we go:

Q:*What costs are covered by the NSLI-Y scholarships?

A: The costs covered by the scholarship are:

•Round-trip travel between the participant’s home region and the overseas host city
•Tuition and academic materials and preparation
•In-country support
•Cultural activities
•Pre-departure and re-entry orientations
•Modest stipend
•Room and board
•Accident and Sickness Program for Exchanges (ASPE) health benefits
Visas

Is the conference call only for year long students or will all programclengths eventually take part?

i’d just like to say i applied, for any of the programs, and have herd NOTHING. is anyone in the same boat i’m in?

Yes your not the only one! I haven’t heard anything and I am getting extremely aggravated. I took so much time and effort filling out everything. I had an amazing interview and I feel as though I am being left in the dark. I’d at least like to know whether I have been rejected or not the suspense is worse than anything at this point. I’d be thrilled to know if I even had a chance or something but good luck wait it out till this coming Friday maybe we will hear something soon?!

agreed, i have a $200 non-refundable school trip deposit due for a trip this summer ( it was due last week)
and i’m not sure what to do, i guess ill just wait it out.
good luck!

SoreSubject–Thanks!! Happy Birthday to you too!! (Even though it’s a bit late)

Congrats to everyone that got in!! Especially chewydog, who even though she was starting to loose hope, often cheered the rest of us up:)

omg thank goodness! i thought that i was the only one.
i said no preference and maybe that was a bad idea because now i really think i’ll be rejected.
this whole process is really getting to me. TELL US ALREADY!

Klika, you make me feel just that much more loved. I’ll see to sending a cookie to you when I find a way to conquer the world.

To all who are still waiting: Show us which program you applied for. Most likely, you landed yourself as an alternate or they just didn’t notify your specific group yet. If you already ran out of hope, I am currently leasing out mine for $32.99 a month. Do keep some back up plans though, just in case.

Mikaela, talk to the organizer of your school trip and explain to them your situation. Request for an extension to this Friday (April 30). It also helps to convince some higher ups that you desparately want to go on the trip, but have to wait on the government to get back to you on a full scholarship to country X.

yeah, i think i’m just gonna be like ‘uhm, the goverenment is extremly slow.’
lol.
i pretty much said i had no preferance, i checked all the boxes except the year.
what’s an alternante, and what are the chances that one atchually goes?
i’m so impatient.

How do you know that you are getting a conference call?
I was accepted to Korea too but I did not recieve an email.
I’m worried now!
