NSLI-Y Program.

afs orientation in nyc…definitely an experience hahaha

It was fuuuun. Those showers were awful, though! By the way, Sore, my two interviewers today went to Russia with you last summer. I asked them if they knew you and they were like “Yeah!!”. Small world.

wicked, who were they!
you could pm me the names but hahah thats wild
showers = brutal
are you applying to anything else for the summer or is nsliy your main goal

I may or may not apply for other stuff for the summer. I’m trying to apply to be a House Page, but I don’t know how that will go. How about you?

i’m trying to be a senate page !!! but for semester, and if that doesn’t work out i’ll apply for the summer too. i’m also applying for an internship in d.c. and a couple other travel scholarships and i might apply to TASP (probably won’t) and then this other thing @ wake forest

i applied to China Fall Sem., China Spring Sem. China Summer

i just went through a whole pack of pages.
it was very helpful. thank you all for the beautiful insights.

i am new so greetings to you all
i applied this year xD.
and for now… im just hoping i’ll at least get an email for an interview for the next 1-2 month.

on the side note o_o; you guys don’t use emoticons? O: LOL.

welcome!
i see myself in you haha i read everything i could about nsliy online
where did you apply for?

LOL ohreally? xD well ur the younger version of me. hehe
anyways i applied to korea summer ;D , china summer xD and i forgot my third choice akhdfs d lol.

I was accepted as a semi-finalist in Florida today! Woo :D

And hi everyone, I’m new here too.

Hi everyone! I’m new here too waves and I was also just selected as a semi-finalist. Question, though - all of you applied to specific countries? I just applied to the Arabic language program. Or does that already imply a specific country?

Also, does anyone know how many of the semi-finalists they’ll actually take?

Ohmigawdddd, you guys! I just got the email!! I’m so so happy, but I have a feeling they took a whole lot more semi-finalists this year than previously. But that’s probably just me being a pessimist XD

wait has anyone gotten an interview face-to face with a afs volunteer?
or do they call you for an interview?

@aliza66: On the website it says “NSLI-Y staff and volunteers will interview almost 1,400 semi-finalists in January”

@supergrover911: congrats! And thanks, but then, how many of those 1,400 semi-finalists will they actually accept? Or do we not know?

They accept around 500-600. I forget the exact numbers but if you play around on the department of state website you can find it I think.

Congrats to all semi-finalists! The next stage is even more nervewracking, so you could try learning a little bit of the future language you’ll be studying! Goodluck on future interviews as well

just got an email – any advice about interviews from the people who have been through this before? :)

Don’t stress! They are looking for level headed individuals who are flexible and good diplomats of America. Express your enthusiasm but don’t be fake.

semi!
yayy~
what kinda things do they ask in the interview?

My two kids (2012D and 2014S) were both notified that they are semi-finalists. I was briefly panic stricken because D’s friend (2011 female - Arabic summer) posted on Facebook that she was a sf so both kids checked their email. D had nothing. Then we checked my email and there it was. Phew! It would have been bad news if only one of them had been granted an interview. Now I hope that both of them get the opportunity. D asked for Korean, Chinese or any summer. S asked for Arabic, Chinese or any summer. He is hoping to do the full year the next year.
