NSLI-Y Program.

Oh that’s good! I’m waiting on the Arabic fall semester…Does anyone know if they have changed the Arabic countries because of all the unrest over there? All I know, is that my parents will be extremely hesitant to send me over there if I do end up getting it…

Any parent whose kid is a candidate for an Arabic program is either pretty puckered up about it, or profoundly oblivious to world affairs. I am in the former category, and have to assume that the program organizers’ grasp of the risks are better informed than my own.

So we’ve got a few more hours left of Friday, and I’m hoping something comes. My #1 was Arabic, followed by Russian, so I’m hoping that maybe the Arabic program is just being notified last.

My DD was on the NSLI trip to Egypt last summer. It was administered by AFS. AFS is a terrific organization and I have great confidence in the judgment of its leadership. The number one priority is always the safety of the kids.

Has anyone had any experience with ACES (specifically, ACES China)? How are they?

MirandaJane, it looks like we are in the same pool, so let me know if you hear any word especially:) I will do the same…

piedpilko, I’m not sure what you mean exactly…what is ACES? :)

American Cultural Exchange Service. It’s one of the groups that NSLI-Y contracts to put on the program, like AFS.

piedpilko - you may have more luck on Exchanges Connect (connect.state.gov “Groups” —> "National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y)

piedpilko- Yes, I would definitely check out Exchange Connect like hellUVAchance had said! I found that a lot of my questions were answered, by snooping on other peoples questions lol! :)

hey piedpilko,
i am going with aces too.

What did your guys’ email say?
Mine said this:

Dear NSLI for Youth Finalists and Alternates,

Congratulations and welcome to AFS! First I would like to congratulate all of you for coming so far in a very tough selection process. At AFS we are confident that you have demonstrated many qualities which will make you an outstanding representative of the United States and a prodigious language learner.

Allow me to introduce myself; my name is Marilyn Stotts and I am a Program Specialist at AFS-USA. We will “meet” on your mandatory conference calls as well as at your Gateway Orientation in New York City before you depart for your exchange experience. My colleagues at AFS-USA and I are working with staff in AFS China, AFS Turkey, AFS Russia and AFS India to ensure that your participation in this program is a success.

Does that mean I’m a finalist or what??
ah! China year!!

@ chguet
Some people on ExchangesConnect said they got the same email and didn’t know if it meant they got it or if they were alternates. I think they said they were going to try and email NSLI-Y, but since you are possibly with AFS I bet if you explain the situation in an email or through online chat that they will gladly look up the status of your app for ya! the chat link is=
