SoreSubject–good luck!!!
chewydog–your comment just made me laugh!! :)

=] well, at least it cheered someone up. Sore, let us know how it went! I’m curious as to everyone’s experiences…

I’ll post my interview experience once I’m done for you chewy, haha hahaha a hotdog cheering me on

It was 34 minutes over the phone.
First questions were easy, are you religious? Is schoolwork the most important thing for your family? Are you quiet/loud? Is your family quiet/loud? Is your family community oriented? Who makes the decisions? Allergies/medical information. Do you smoke? Is your family strict? Are they protective? Are you a night owl or a morning bird? What do you like to do with your family? Are you from a small town/big city? Biggest city near you, is your neighborhood upper class, upper middle, lower middle, or lower class? Is your family always on the go, or more laid back? Describe yourself, describe your school. What do you like about school?

Then it got to the harder questions… Describe yourself in three adjectives, what is the hardest thing you have overcame in your life/how did you cope? It’s the first day of school and people say hi but no one carries on a meaningful coversation, what do you do? An achievement in which you are proud of. Besides learning the language what are two goals you have for this program? Then off the record, what are your concerns for the program?

It’s hard to know what they are looking forward. There is no right or wrong answer to any of the questions they asked you; and no one really knows what constitute the best candidate. I am you did well and good luck Soresubject!!

Hm…not much different from mine, besides the 3 adj. thing. I would have blurted out: addicted fanatic [of] adventuristicness or something along those lines. Glad you got a laugh! Do you think you did well? If you rocked the interview, no worries of humbleness…

An interesting tidbit from my interviewer- she mentioned that NSLI is looking for students who are flexible and rejecting those who aren’t (i.e. people who listed only one choice, like Chinese Summer, on their application).

Well I also changed mine to Russian, Turkish, and Farsi!
Thank you for that watchmesoar.

Uh chewy I think I did fine like a 90%, looking back I wish I answered some differently haha.

Thank you forest! And I agree its hard to know what they are expecting

That’s good Sore! I started balbbering on a little in mine looking back.

Watchmesoar, that puts my mind at peace a bit more, as for every question pretty much that dealt with preferences, I stated something I favored, and then said other things are okay with me as long as I go!

1 Russia and S. Korea (any)

2 China (had originally selected “summer” but at interview said that anytime for any of these programs I selected is fine)

I had my interview two weekends ago and I think I did pretty well. I made my interviewer laugh a lot but I got stuck on a question or two. And she pretty much told me my answer wasn’t what she was looking for. :x Does the interview really make or break the application?

Also, I applied for (1) China, (2) Korea, (3) Russia. I heard that there are some really competitive countries and a few that aren’t quite competitive. I would assume that China is pretty popular, so it would be competitive, but what about the other ones?

Jamlessberries, I don’t think Korea is as competitive compared to both China and Russia. Also, someone posted on this thread saying that their interviewer told them that the interview portion only counts for 20%.

Soreject: Just curious. Are you a senior or junior? Have you applied to any where else. Have fun.

Well, China and Russia are definitely the most popular ones. Korea isn’t as popular, but it’s far more popular than Persian.

I’m actually a sophomore, and by any where else do you mean with the NSLI-Y program or another program?

bump, Interviews should be finished by now

SoreSubject: I am wondering if you are considering studying abroad with other programs.
I don;t really know any other programs; do you?

There is AFS, YFU, Rotary, etc.

I do not think I will study abroad for a year or semester until I am finished with highschool… so NSLI-Y is my best bet!

So…Any interesting tidbits about NSLI-Y by anyone?

Haha this thread is dead…
Has everyone completed their physical?

it’ll probably be dead until they start notifying us.

and, yeah, i forgot about that form until yesterday!
