NSLI-Y Summer 2019

Wait what? @Rubels305

@Rubels305 , I think all cities in China have been announced, although there’s always a chance there are more letters to be sent out.

Do you think this program or a year program is a better choice?

Also do they send a rejection letter or do you just assume u don’t get in?

@rubel365, all rejected applicants are notified, but possibly not until mid-April.

I think the China spots have been filled, but that’s just my opinion. If I’m correct, however, it seems a bit unfortunate that they make rejectees wait a month just to be notified. In the age of the Internet, FB, CC, reddit, etc., the “secret” is entirely out that accepted China applicants have been notified. We’ll see what happens from here.

@Rubels305 I think either would suffice! But in terms of choosing, it would depend on how long you want to stay there or if your school would let you study abroad for a year. Both would be great experiences though.

Also, they do send rejection letters. I believe summer rejections come out after all summer acceptances have been released, and then year rejections after the year acceptances are released.

Personally, I think an academic year program is better and maybe easier to get accepted. However, please note: “Past NSLI-Y summer participants are eligible to apply for an academic year program, but are not eligible to apply for another summer program. Successful alumni of summer programs will be considered more competitive if they apply for an academic year program in the same language (with the exception of Indonesian, Persian and Turkish, which have no academic year programs). No applicant is eligible for a third NSLI-Y program.”
So basically, one can start

@Joyfultune , curious to know why you think academic year is easier to get into. I would imagine it is still difficult. There are fewer applicants, but also fewer spots for them to compete for.

(But as always, I’m learning there are a lot of factors I don’t know at this point!)

All programs for every language and duration have about the same acceptance rate. There are fewer spots for AY than summer but fewer people apply for those programs. The programs that have more applicants will have more spots available so it pretty much evens out in the end. But in my opinion and some of my fellow nsli-y friends, academic year programs can be slightly more competitive. Nonetheless, all nsli-y programs are very competitive.

This is NOT current but this was helpful when I was applying (and I honestly don’t even remember who shared this document with me):

“1. Arabic: 88 for summer; 15 for academic year. Programs may be proposed for Jordan,
Kuwait, Morocco, and Oman. If security considerations permit and ECA concurs, programs
in Tunisia and Egypt may be added at a later time.
2. Bahasa: 15 for summer. Programs may be proposed for Indonesia.
3. Chinese (Mandarin): 160 for summer; 28 for academic year. Programs may be proposed
for the People’s Republic of China and Taiwan.
4. Hindi: 30 for summer; 5 for academic year. Programs may be proposed for India.
5. Korean: 80 for summer; 12 for academic year. Programs may be proposed for the Republic
of Korea (South Korea).
6. Persian (Tajiki or Farsi): 12 for summer. One program may be proposed for Tajikistan.
7. Russian: 110 for summer; 15 for academic year. Programs may be proposed for Russia,
Estonia, Latvia, and Moldova.
8. Turkish: 15 for summer, 5 for academic year. Programs may be proposed for Turkey.”

@kimmisoh Yeah, I can see how academic year would be more competitive. And that file has been circulating around quite a lot, haha. Even though it’s not up to date, it’s kind of interesting to see the general numbers.

Do y’all think Arabic will be today? I’m hoping it is

@pldmua2003 Hmm, maybe. I’m still waiting for those Korean notifications too, lol. This silence from NSLI-Y is getting to me

At this point, they’ll probably release Korean before Arabic and Arabic summer on March 31st!

My guess is Korean tomorrow and Arabic on Friday. The 31st is a Sunday and I don’t think they’ve ever done a Sunday before.

@sapmom True, I don’t think they’d release on a Sunday. But hey, at least it’s the end of March! Summer notifications will end soon, and then year acceptances will be rolling out. Better a few more days of waiting than a few months

Not so fast … According to the official website: All summer semi-finalists will be notified of their final status by mid-April 2019.

@Joyfultune All summer notifications will likely be sent out before the end of the month. It is rare for summer notifications to come out in April. For the past several years, they’ve finished summer notifications by the end of March.

@kimmisoh Yeah, that’s what I was thinking. I know that the order of notifications have been switched this year, but I feel like timing-wise they would be out by this Friday.

Did they always say summer semi-finalists would be notified by mid-April? I can’t remember if they said that last year.

I am a finalist for arabic summer in amman jordan!
