side note: is there enough Hindi applicants out there for us to make a facebook chat? I advertised a hindi group in the 2012/2013 group but we dont have very many members. let me know if you are interested haha
Congratulations Everyone who has MADE IT! and if you didn’t, don’t stress out. You will still go on to do amazing things. If you have read the past year, a lot of really qualified people didn’t make it but ended up later getting a different opportunity to travel whether for volunteer work, family, or another program. Take this as motivation to study more and try even harder next year. ^^
I’m a Semifinalist for Russia summer and year!!!
I’m Chirag, senior and also a semifinalist! I’m taking Hindi so let me know about that group chat. Good luck to all.

I’m really happy to have been accepted. My email came around 12:45 EST (in OH) and I applied for Korea/China summer.
@clal21 and @chelys the name of the Facebook group is NSLI-Y Hindi Applicants 2016-2017 you can ask to join that, or you can friend me directly and ill set up the chat. Either works.
So uhhhh there really aren’t many Tajik applicants I guess.
@applecity16
yeah, it is known to be the smallest applicant pool.
Do you know how many go to Tajikistan?
Hello everyone congrats on acceptances and best luck next time on rejections there are still many opportunities out there for the future. Here are my details.

Congrats to all~
Keep posting! I am so excited for all of you!
My daughter, a freshman, was sent a “semi-finalist” email around noon today. We live in Michigan. @deedle13 where in Michigan are you??
Can someone answer these?
- She applied for Russian summer and Russian full year, but from reading through these posts she is not necessarily a semi-finalist for both of these, right? Is the decision made by lottery after all the interviews take place?
- Which medical forms are you supposed to fill out and upload if both a summer and year long program were requested?
- Can anyone comment on why semi-finalists are turned down? Is it primarily the interview, or just not enough room based on # applicants per program/country?
Thanks so much!
Sophomore from Massachusetts got accepted around 1:30 today!!! I applied for Arabic summer and Mandarin summer! Congrats to all semifinalists! Good luck to anyone who hasn’t heard yet! And good luck to all semifinalists in the next round!!
- She is not considered a semi for any specific program, however it is very likely that she will get her top choice program if selected for the scholarship.
- I believe she should fill out the year medical form.
- NSLI-Y is somewhat cryptic and secretive about their selection process so i don’t know who would be able to answer your question exactly. It certainly has something to do with the amount of spaces provided. From what i have heard the interviewer will write another recommendation of sorts, and then the over all application will be reviewed again, i’m not sure about this either, though.
Does anyone know how many applicants there were this year? and is it just me, or was there only one wave of acceptances and two waves of rejections? Is it over? This year was so weird?
@Vnorovy
I am certainly no expert on this process as this is my first year applying but I admit to doing way too much reading on NSLI-Y. This is some of what I’ve gathered, please correct me if I’m wrong
1.) Technically I believe she is a semi-finalist for each, though think her placement will be determined by which they believe fits her best of the two, or if one of her two choices is filled.
2.) I would assume that the year medical form would be more extensive and in turn cover what is on the summer medical form. Either way I would suggest that you email or call the organization, from what I’ve experienced they are extremely supportive and want to make this process as understandable as possible.
3.) One thing I remember reading was that during the finalist selection process that is when they review your application collectively including the teacher and parent recommendation. However, the interview does play a vital role as it is likely the only face to face discussion that will be looked over in her application. For the more competitive languages with more applicants space is understandably a larger issue that they need to account for but as I said earlier there are many other aspects.
@itstricky
I believe the ballpark number was 3600 last year which got cut down to 1200 semi-finalists, which then gets reduced to 600. This link should give you a better idea:

S3 is a semi finalist, Korean and Russian summer. So exciting!
