NSLIY 2016-2017

@IvyLdriven I believe I live near you. Where is your interview?

Fresno

I just got done with my Skype interview a few hours ago!

How do you think it went?

@IvyLdriven I think it went okay, I personally think I answered to the best of my ability.

Uhmm has anyone gotten an email interview from NSLIY yet?
I’m a semifinalist for the China summer program and still haven’t received one; kind of worried >.<

@divinery
You may want to contact the NSLIY office and just check to see what your status is, you can contact them by phone 866-790-2086 or email nsliy@americancouncils.org, I’m sure they’re just really busy so don’t worry yourself too much!

@hollyh77
I’m so glad it went well! :slight_smile: Did you find that it was more like a conversation than a Q and A interview? Also, if you’re comfortable sharing could you mention a few of the questions they asked? Thank you!

For anyone worried about not getting an interview notification yet, I want to mention that last year I didn’t get my interview information until January 7. I live in the SoCal area (specifically Los Angeles) so I hope that helps as a reference.
If you see that people in your area have gotten interviews but you haven’t, then I would deem it worrisome as usually NSLI-Y distributes info by area. Definitely contact NSLI-Y if this is the case for you.

Illinois here applying for the Russian summer; I had my interview yesterday so if anyone has any questions just send me a PM and I’ll answer as best as I can. In general, It was much more relaxed than I expected. My interviewer did a great job of letting me lead the conversation and asking questions that would relate to some of my answers, so think before you say something because you may be asked to clarify or give an example etc. I also looked at tons of blogs and videos that gave NSLIY interview tips but the advice that I found to be most helpful is to just have a few stories on hand that you might want to incorporate that could demonstrate positive traits of yours in action. Good luck to all of you !

My son got an email today for scheduling his interview. We are in Massachusetts.

Will be interviewing on the 23rd in the greater Cincinnati area!

@Theretheygo My daughter is also interviewing in MA on Jan 23rd. Where is your son interviewing? My daughter has applied for the Mandarin Summer.

This question might have already been asked, but I was wondering if any dual NSLI-Y/YES candidates can give me some tips on their interview experiences. What kind of questions were you asked? How many people were there? Was it a group or an individual interview? I’ve heard the YES interviews are a lot harder than NSLI-Y (I had a NSLI interview last year).
Any advice/info would be greatly appreciated :slight_smile:

@curlykat My interview is in a week, so I can’t speak to difficulty of questions yet, but I do know that we scheduled individual, not group, time slots. Best of luck!

Just had my interview yesterday. It was really not that bad. Now we have to get through months of unbearable WAITING… Bleh. Any other NSLI-Y Turkish applicants here?

Yep me. Just had my interview today. Was so nervous. There’s a lot of money on the line.

@IvyLdriven Ahh how’d it go :)? Also, what do you mean there’s a lot of money on the line?

well the cost of sending students overseas and enrolling them in language courses are expensive, other wise we wouldn’t be applying for a scholarship. It went pretty good i think. thanks again for sending me those questions, gave me a chance to prepare. unfortunately the only asked me three 5 of the ones you sent me. Me in my interviewer hit it off. she would ask me a question, I would answer it, then two minutes later were talking about something unrelated.

@IvyLdriven
Sounds like it went really well! :slight_smile: I’m glad the questions did a bit to prepare you; I think the focal point is the conversation which It seems like you had lots of! Now the grueling wait begins… >…<

Hi everyone! DS just had his interview and the interviewer said that it counted for over 50% towards the final decision. I thought I saw in prior years people were told it counted for about 20%. Has anyone else been told the weight given to the interview?
