NSLIY 2016-2017

@Ruzzen would we be responsible for getting the visa? Not that it’s a huge problem, just wondering

@Ruzzen
February 28?!? That’s so close! I literally check my email every 6 seconds. Speaking of… is it a phone call or an email notification?

@Ruzzen holy cow that’s early! Hopefully things are just as expedient this year! Any idea how other programs followed after that last year?

@saviam If you look at the CC thread NSLI-Y 2015-2016 you’ll get a good idea of the order that notifications come out

@college61728
Yes, I believe should you get to that point they will send you instructions regarding exactly how that will work. However because at that point you will be a finalist they cover all costs associated with the visa and other required steps.That’s what I’ve gathered from what I’ve read at least. :slight_smile:

@phoneme16
I know, we’re completely on the same page! Honestly, I keep telling myself not to get too excited and not to obsess over it, but I keep checking my email and this blog! :stuck_out_tongue: Perhaps it’s best I just brew myself a cup of tea and work on my Russian instead of checking up on NSLIY so often.

@savlam
I’m just creeping on last year’s blog and I’ve been able to piece this together, keep in mind these are just the earliest notifications for each language:

Russian Summer (Narva, Estonia)- Feb 27,2015 11:26am
Hindi Summer (Unknown)- Feb 27,2015 5:06pm
Persian Summer (Tajikistan)-Feb 28,2015 4:49 pm
Turkish Summer (Brusa, Turkey)- March 10,2015 3:43 pm
Arabic Summer (Rabat, Morocco)- March 24,2015 2:59pm
Chinese Summer (Jiaxing, China)- March 25,2015 2:18pm
Korean Summer (Songdo, South Korea)- April 1,2015 5:32pm

Anyways, I hope this helps, but once again these are just the earliest notification dates for the summer programs, I believe year programs come out after all of the summer finalists have been announced.

Of course the two I applied for were the last ones to come out last year

@Ruzzen
I definitely did the same creeping as you last night. I think I went through like 40 pages of comments…

@phoneme16
Haha It’s become a horrible habit, just relentlessly checking everything that may have information. Especially the videos, they’re the best by all means.

Hi everyone! Obviously, most of you are anxiously anticipating the release of the summer program decisions. I was in your position last year, and I can tell you the wait is truly excruciating! But, it will be all worth it when you finally know the endgame. Try to stop refreshing your emails, and use this time to stay on top of your schoolwork, get involved in something new, or read a book you never have had time for.

I went to China last summer with NSLI-Y, and I can honestly say it was the best experience of my life! People who have never been on a NSLI-Y trip just do not know how influential they are on us young people. I loved the experience so much, I am currently a semi-finalist for the year program - something I’d never thought I would apply for.

Feel free to ask me any questions about the application process or about the Chinese program (daily life, school, etc.)!

A quick question I want to through out to you guys. Do you guys study your target language on weekends when homework is done and school breaks ( like I do) or do you guys incorporate it into your daily chores? I guess my real question is if I’m being lazy lol

@IvyLdriven I would, if I had time to. As long as you’re doing it (unlike me) you aren’t being very lazy.

Hi everyone! I joined CC after being a lurker for a long time to join the anxious wait!
Last year, I applied for NSLI-Y Korean summer and was rejected. I ended up being rejected and not even a semifinalist.
Then, I was given an amazing opportunity from a family friend who offered to pay for me to go to Korea last summer through EIL: Peace Studies. It was the best experience of my life and I am dying to go back! I lived in Seoul, Gwangju, and Jeonju during homestay.

I am a semifinalist for NSLI-Y Korea summer and I am so nervous that I will be rejected. I have my fingers crossed for all of us!

@IvyLdriven
The way I look at it is whether or not I get into NSLIY, I’m going to want to study Russian. That means I’m not putting it off only for weekends and holidays, but really whenever I have fluctuations in homework load I may slide in some studying. But really, I don’t think it makes anyone lazy to not study their target language, we’re all very busy after all. I know that some programs send pre-departure lessons and that you will include assignments etc. and if someone is accepted they’ll need to find a time to do that, but besides that I think it’s just how comfortable you want to be in your new environment so if the case calls for it, you won’t have to stumble over how to say simple thing, or ask for help.

@aseolyoung
Glad you joined. I’m so happy that you kept at it and have become a semifinalist this time! that’s a huge step. Also, That EIL: peace studies program seems really immersive, I just looked them up and really like their global aim. Was the whole experience with a host family?

@OGPStudent Which region in China did you go? Do they change regions every year? My understanding is that applicants have no input on the region they get sent, correct?

@websensation I went to Jiaxing in the Zhejiang province; I was assigned the city when I was accepted to the program. You will have absolutely no input into anything, but that is something you’ll get used to in study abroad. I know the Jiaxing program has been going for a few years, so they do recycle programs in cities each year. Other cities I know they use are Deyang, Suzhou, Hangzhou, Beijing, and Shanghai.

@Ruzzen I lived with a host family about 10/30 days in Jeonju. While we lived in the temple, in Seoul, and Gwangju, we stayed with Korean college volunteers and fellow experimenters in dorms (: EIL was very lovely this way, as we were able to experience both family life, temple life, and social life. I recommend the program strongly to anyone who ends up not going to NSLI-Y.
Your Russian study is also very wonderfil, not many people are that dedicated. Best of luck! (:

Hey, I was wondering for any Arabic alum out there, is the summer program always in Rabat, Morocco? (Especially for males)

Also, I know this is taboo, but does race (with regards to safety) have anything to do with selection? I’ve read and know that in some middle eastern countries (including Morocco) that people with dark skin (i.e. Blacks) are often treated poorly or harassed. Now I’m worried I might not be chosen do to safety reasons and that kind of thing.

I wonder if Russian applicants (like me!) could hear something this week @-)

@wmila2 I wouldn’t be surprised if Russian summer came out the last few days of Feb since it has seemed to the past few years as well! I just hope the other programs will follow quickly after! :slight_smile:
