ahh i’m already so nervous! how will i wait till december? LOL but thanks for the replies guys! good luck to all of u
time flies m8s. Try and distract yourself with school, or other applications. I need to start working on my college apps now. ugh.
definitely don’t dwell on everything, one day you will know what your status is and no amount of worrying is gonna prevent that. honestly i would say that its probably best to stay as far away from all the application info as possible. Nothing feels worse than knowing people are getting emails when you aren’t.
@yujifuji
yeah, last year all the semifinalists were notified on the 1st of December and all the rejections were given out on the second of December more or less.
Hey if any of you guys want to exchange essays over private message to give feedback for next year in case we don’t make it this year that would be great! PM me if you would like to do so!~
@EmmaPotts I am still really self-conscious about my essays, but I would love to give feedback on yours! Is this your first time applying? I’m so nervous!
I totally understand where you are coming from! I was nervous too but it really does help! I am grateful to all the people that I exchanged essays with last year for giving me feedback that I have taken consideration of. And I applied last year as a freshman and made it to semis. So now I am a sophomore and hoping to go all the way! ^^ I will pm you my essays and if you feel up to the challenge, I would like to give feedback on yours too ~
I just applied for the year in Korea as my first choice and China as my second and I’m so nervous! This was my first time applying and I have no idea how I’m going to be able to wait till December to know if I make it to the semifinalist!
Hey, guys! I just finished applying and am proud to say that my application and papers have been sent. The only thing that hasn’t been sent, is my parent recommendation. Mom didn’t know that it was due at 4, not midnight. Can they pull my application without it, or can I still try to send it in? This is a very urgent question.
@Cosmopolitian13
I personally know someone who made it to semis without a parent recoommendation so who knows. If it allows you to submit one then do it but otherwise I think you will have to just wait and see what happens.
@EmmaPotts Wow, this is a great relief to hear! This is my first year applying, though I’m a senior, and my first choice is the Chinese summer. I thank you Emma and wish you luck! I can’t wait for the results!
Ah, good evening (morning really) everyone. I’ve just finished reading through last year’s blog and the beginning of this one. As you may guess the reason I’m up this late could only be defined as the excitement behind NSLI-Y possibilities (or perhaps part of my cold is to blame for that as well).
Anyways, Onwards!
One thing I have noted is that this year seems to have many more applicants to the Russian program just in this chat alone. Comparing that to the overwhelming Korean and Chinese applicants of last year it’s a little unsettling for a Russian applicant like me.
I can’t wait to wait out these horribly agonizing 3 weeks with all of you! ^-^
isnt there a program like nsily but for college? exchange is super fun but it can be quite limited when you are young, at least from my experiences in Korea this summer.
@notronaldreagan
Here ya go: http://www.exchanges.state.gov/us/find-programs
I came across this link in an older blog and it seems to cover a much broader age group. I also believe that all the programs or scholarships are backed by either the government or a third party program. hope that helped a bit.
Yeah, there is. It is called CLS

Im a sophomore and this is my first year applying to NSLIY. I chose China summer and im really doubting ill get it because 1. its the most popular program and 2. i wrote all of my essays the day before at midnight (probably not the best idea). but i REALLy want to go and am hoping i make it. Good luck to everyone else that applied!
Welcome @zancarelipy!
I’m a Sophomore as well so you’re certainly not alone.
Just curious, what’s made you so fond of Chinese, and do you know any already? We were required to take a semester of mandarin in middle school and all of the short and subtle tones was something I had trouble getting down. .
@zancarelipy @Ruzzen
Welcome! It is great to see more sophomores since this program is heavily run by Juniors and Seniors it seems. I am applying for Korean summer but i do wish you luck with China. Even though it is the most popular program, it has the most openings/slots so it is considerably better than a program with less slots ^^ i am just so excited that we will probably be hearing soon. Only about 2 weeks or so!!
@EmmaPotts
Thank you! China and Korea look fantastic.
Myself, I’m applying to the Russian Summer as my first and only choice. Unfortunately, there aren’t too many blogs or videos of past alum from Russia, so in turn I’ve seen my fair share of Korean and Chinese vlogs :P.
I cannot wait for the notifications to come out, luckily we have Thanksgiving break between now and December to take our minds off of NSLI-Y for a little while at least!
Hi! I used to go to this chinese school but we only met once a week so it was hard to retain anything, but ever since i started Chinese in high school, i’ve learned so much
Try CLS (Critical Language Scholarship) @notronaldreagan
Does anyone know when in December semi-finalist notifications come out? Early, mid, or late December?
