NU.in transfer credit for a pre-med! Please help!

So this whole college selection thing is really stressing me out. I was between the University of Miami and Northeastern U and was leaning more towards NEU.

I was accepted to the NU.in program so I can't really start til spring, which screws me up a lot because I plan to go in as a pre-med and was going to take Biology and Chemistry my first semester so I don't fall behind on my Pre-requisites for med school. First, I don't know if taking Biology and Chemistry at a foreign university in Australia is the best thing because I wanted to get the best background on these subjects since they will be on the MCAT. Also, I just read that any credit received abroad will not factor into my NEU GPA and it will show as a transfer credit as pass/fail and not even a grade! How will this be factored into my science/AMCAS GPA for med schools?

I need a lot of help because I was very excited to go to NEU but now it looks like it might do more harm than good. Please shed some light on this! Any insight would help!

It’s totally normal for people to start taking the general science courses a semester or two “late”. You have plenty of time to fit them in before taking the MCAT and applying to med school, so if you really don’t want to take them during your nu.in semester, you won’t be behind. I switched into a science major as a sophomore and still easily fit everything I needed. I know a good number of other people who also came in late to science and still fit everything in without problems (including one headed to a top medical school and one now in pharmacy school). It’s not a big deal.

But, I also don’t think there’s any reason not to take Bio while abroad. Honestly, gen bio I is just a basic review of biology, and it’s the least useful class when it comes to preparing for the MCAT. Everything you learn in first semester Bio will be re-learned in depth in upper-level classes (genetics, molecular cell, biochem, etc etc), and that’s the information you need to know.

If I were in your position, I’d take Bio I during NU.in, and then Bio II and Chem I during your spring semester at northeastern. Either way, though, you’ll be fine.

Wow you have no idea how much you have helped me! This solves all the issues I had (and alleviated some stress haha). Hopefully after I visit thus Friday I will be sending in my deposit. Thank you so much!
