NUin Question Answering

Hello! I am a combined American Sign Language Interpreting and Theater major freshman who participated in NUin at the Montreal, Canada site last semester. Additionally, I am a NUin Alumni Ambassador, and my older brother attended NUin Melbourne, Australia four years ago. So I have a bit on insight on the program, and I am willing and able to answer as many questions as I can, since I know it can be a bit of a scary and confusing admission decision. And congratulations on your acceptance to Northeastern!

Hello, my friend got into the NUIN program for College of Arts Media and Design, and she is considering switching majors to Nutrition, She would like your general thoughts and opinions on the program. Would switching later down the road be a problem. Anything else that comes to mind that she should know.

Basically, she wants your opinion. She is a little scared since she did not expect to get into this program. Thanks!

I’ve applied for ASL Interpreting class is 2021! I’m so worried about NU.in because it seems so financially crippling…

@czebos So as far as switching majors, really the only thing that would be affected is what sites she’d be eligible to attend, since that’s determined by college, but that’s only if she decides to switch before NUin. Otherwise, major switching is pretty straight forward and wouldn’t really matter since the majority of NUin courses fulfill general NU core requirements and it’s super simple to switch majors.
I definitely get being a little scared- even though I knew what the program was before my acceptance, I was still pretty nervous about surviving on my own for four months. Really what I would suggest is researching as much as possible on the NUin website and watch the student videos on Youtube (you can find them by searching “NUin (country) 2016”). The videos are probably the thing that truly helped me make my decision. In addition, really consider the whether the opportunities and experiences you can get from NUin are what you want. I absolutely love NUin and consider it one of the best experiences I’ve had- I would do it again in a heartbeat- but I also know that it isn’t for everyone. The thing that always sticks with me and helped me make my final decision was my mom asking me, “If you don’t do this, will you feel like you missed out?” And when I realized that the answer was yes, I knew I needed to go for it.
In terms of my opinion on the program, like I said, I think it is a remarkable, unique program that can really lead to personal growth and is a ton of fun. I’ve seen countless times how much more mature and capable NUin alums are, and I honestly couldn’t picture myself doing anything other than NUin for my freshman semester. I hope that helps! Let me know if she wants any more specifics.

@czebos Also, if she wants some more in-depth info and a chance to ask questions in person/get a feel for the program, I would highly recommend her attending either an Inside NUin session or a Welcome Day to learn more. Inside NUin are hour long sessions presented by the NUin staff and there are student alumni, like myself, at every session to talk about our experiences and answer questions. There are also NUin panels and a table staffed by NUin Alumni Ambassadors happy to chat at all the Welcome Days.

Did anyone admitted to NUin receive financial aid? I just found out they need 2 more forms from me, so I haven’t received anything yet.

Hi! I’m very interested in the China site, and although it is a new addition to the list of destinations, I was wondering if you have an idea on how fast it might fill up. How fast do spots for the other destinations typically fill up? I am waiting on replies from 2 more universities before paying my deposit, but NUin is a definitely a top choice. I don’t want the spots for China to fill up before I hear back from other schools. What do you think I should do?

Here’s a prior thread as well

@stelliferous I think that there are some people admitted to NUin who receive financial aid, but I think that those who do can only apply it after the fall semester due to international rules and such that make it difficult to apply federal aid to international learning.

@vzee1105 It definitely depends on the site- for instance, London usually fills up within a few weeks of decisions, and last year Canada was filled by the second week in April. It’s hard to say for sure though, because it varies by year and how many people they decide to take for each site, which they often change based off feed back from previous years. My guess would be that China would be a smaller group since this is their first year (I know that when Canada was in its first year in 2015 they only took roughly 50 kids) but that could be totally different for China. My advice would be to do a lot of research while waiting for your last two decisions so that once they come in you already have a solid sense of how you’re leaning. Also, the best way to keep an eye on how the sites is filling is on the NUin website: https://www.northeastern.edu/nuin/
On the main page, they’ll put a banner across the top of the page when sites are beginning to reach capacity and when they have filled. It’s no an exact science, but it at least gives you a sense of the time frame you have to make your decision.

Hi! I was wondering how it was after you came back from the program. I saw on other threads that a lot of people got nice upperclassman dorms but I prefer freshman dorms. So is it possible to get freshman dorms? Also, how hard is it to get into clubs?

@west123 Yes, it is possible to have freshmen housing upon returning. In the fall you fill out a housing form where you rank your preference for freshman, semiprivate, and apartment style housing. I think most people tend to receive their first choice. Joining clubs isn’t difficult at all. Because NU is such a fluid campus with people constantly leaving and coming back from co-op, there’s an expectation in clubs that there will be some turn over in membership each semester. And it’s easy to find clubs to join because there’s a huge Winter Involvement fair during the first week of classes which many of the clubs are represented at.

How quickly do the NUIn spots fill up? My friend wants to know how much time she has to make a decision

@czebos It depends on the site, and how many people they’re taking. London is usually the first to fill (last year I believe it filled on 3/29), Canada was second last year (I think on 4/12) and then one of the Ireland sites a few days later. So if she wants London, she should make the decision sooner rather than later. The best way to know the status of the sites is to keep an eye on the NUin website- they put a banner across the top of the page when sites are beginning to reach capacity and when they fill.

So when do NUin students choose rooming, classes, etc for the spring semester. Also do we stay in traditional dorms in the sister colleges or do we get choices between like apartment style or freshman like dorms. Last question, when NUin students come back to Boston do they typically room with other NUin students? thanks!!

@Yzegeye In the fall while you’re still abroad you receive info from housing and residential life that allows you to apply for spring housing. I believe the initial applications go in around mid October. Similarly, in early November your academic advisor will contact you to set up your spring classes. The housing style while you’re abroad varies greatly according to which site you’re staying at- you can find all of that information on the NUin website on each respective site page under the housing section. Some people live with other NUin students upon returning (I’m currently living with one of my very good friends from Canada) and some are placed in apartment or dorms that have space. You can request a roommate on your housing application who you did NUin with, and they do a good job of honoring those requests, although it all ultimately comes down to room availability so requests aren’t guaranteed.

@czebos From the NUIn website today

Hi. I was admitted into the N.U. in program. I am planning to major in Business administration and political science. I have two options for choosing an international location, Australia and Greece. Could you please give me some feedback on either one of the sites and the programs that are offered there… I don’t have much time to decide. Any help would be appreciated.
