number of colleges one can apply to

hw many colleges can u apply to in the US?
is there a limit? if not, how many is ideal and recommended by u?
do u have to apply to fewer colleges in US if u are applying i other countries as well.
answers are greatly appreciated people. thank you...

no limit -- but the wisdom is why waste time if by researching beforehand, you can narrow down to a workable amount of colleges. Aim for 5-8 colleges, I'd say.

There's no limit, but there's also little point in applying to a school you wouldn't want to attend.
Practical limiting factors tend to be: application fee for each school, fees to send test scores to each school, additional essays for each school, willingness of your teachers to fill out more rec forms for each school, amount of time you have to make sure that your application is complete at each school.
I would say that after the early decision round is done, most students at our high school submit 10-12 (this number is probably higher because we're in California and multiple applications to different University of California campuses are easily done).

8 highest here usually... that's already a lot of money one would spend on the applications themselves unless one has fee waivers

I don't understand people who apply to 12 colleges... pick a few colleges you know you'll get in at and you would like going to, pick a few reaches... not 12

I have a friend (seriously a friend... I am only applying to like 7) who is applying to 16... so in answer... no limit... it's just more work for you if you want to apply to that many.

i know someone who applied to 23, but it gets really expensive after a while.

Im applying to 14 but thats only because i've been getting preferred applications wich are quick and have no fees :)

I heard the record for our high school is 52, which is really expensive because the high school charges $15 for each school to send the transcripts.
