I was wondering - is there a number of recommendations Rice will stop accepting?

While Rice requires one teacher recommendation, I have 2 (Due to other colleges requiring two; they were assigned to all colleges on my Common App list.)

I have my counselor recommendation as well.

With that, I am planning on sending a letter of recommendation from my mentor who I've interned for during the summer. I believe his letter will give admissions more insight about what I've done in his lab.

This will make my total number of recommendations to be 4.

My question is - Will Rice disregard the letter from my mentor because of my previous recommendations? (Since I already sent in my app, they have already received all other recommendations besides this letter yet.) Is there a chance that they will not read it?

Oh no I have a similar but different problem. Since Rice only wanted one rec I wanted it to be from my APUSH teacher but my Bio AP teacher who is also writing my recs for other schools submitted it first, and also ended up submitting it to Rice. She submitted it through Naviance, do you (or anyone else) know whether submitting it through Naviance automatically sends it to all schools on my common app list?? My friend had the exact same problem, except worse!! Hopefully this isn’t happening to everyone. :/

3lite - 4 should be fine. Be sure to email Rice and let them know that another one is coming. I sent in a bunch as well and made it in, so It cannot be that bad! Good Luck.

petaandpita - I am not sure about whether Naviance goes to Rice. Be sure to email or call Rice and see what they have received. Rice will use both your letters If I am not mistaken.

For questions like this, it is always best to call/email Rice and check. They will have the right answer for sure and have access to what has arrived and what has not.

When I was at the Explore Rice day they specifically mentioned the fact that they only wanted the 2 recommendations, one teacher and the counselor letter. The admissions officers said that they kept the number at two recs so that people wouldn’t send tons of letters. I wouldn’t burden them with a large number of letters unless they are completely necessary. The admissions people don’t take into account who you know, it’s simply a way for them to put a personality with the application. I don’t think you’ll get denied for sending more than two recs, but it’s just a something to keep in mind.

jztimmons - it is less about who you know and about what perspective these people can render. Sometimes your teachers know one side of you, but the people you volunteer with know the other. That being said, you are right about not hosing them with letters. But sometimes more helps. I sent a few extra myself (albeit with extreme pressure from my mother)

Definitely. If you can send extra letters that help the admissions officers get to know you, I would send them. Basically, just don’t send five letters saying the same thing. I agree.
