Im doing AP physics B this fall ( junior year ) ... Is doing it at the end of my junior year a little too late?

Also, I plan to major in Mechanical Engineering in college ( im gonna try applying to the MIT ( long shot ) , Cornell, Upenn, Carnegie Melon, etc,etc ) ... for Sat II are the following subjects sufficient: Physics, World History and Math ( not sure which level is needed.. Level 2 ? ) ??

Not really...unless you're planning to apply to college a year early :)
Once you take the AP course corresponding to a subject, the SAT II is a piece of cake, even if your performance on the AP Exam is less than stellar...

I doubt i'll be going for EA or ED.. I'm one of those types who can never make up their mind and I usually avoid locking in on decisions unless I absolutely have to ( not good I know but i'm gonna improve.. gonna try getting ahead of the college game and not postpone,etc... )

Yes, but my real question is why take the SAT llS at all when colleges are accepting the ACT instead? Is there some other reason I'm not aware of?

SAT IIs can be easier if they're in a topic you really like

some colleges require that if you take ACT, you also have 3 SAT IIs...Georgetown and up do this, I'm sure (except Swarthmore doesn't)...

Thanks for your responses. . Guidance counselors at kid's school had advised the ACT option....but considering they didn't let us know about the SAT lls until so late maybe we should question that advice. We are just putting a list of schools together and so far it seems the ACT will be enough. If it turns out SAT lls are needed guess they can be taken in Fall.

Jai, you can apply to MIT EA non-binding and non-exclusive, so that it's basically the same thing as RD but earlier. Excellent setup.

Some kids do better on the ACT, some do better on the SAT, and some do the same on both. Yes, there are many colleges that do not require SAT II or fewer SAT II if ACT is taken and scores submitted (e.g., Yale does not require SAT II if the ACT is taken, but may give placement for some SAT II testing). Harvard still requires 3 SAT II with either the SAT I or ACT...even though they used to require that writing be one of the SAT II and it it now part of both SAT I and ACT! Go figure. My D took the ACT and did very well, so decided not to take the SAT I. However, she is still taking 3 SAT II because certain colleges require them.
