I was recently at a college prep conference and was told by a speaker that taking only 2 SAT Subject tests was low for entry into competitive schools. The individual recommended that students should take at least 5 SAT subject tests in order to give the applicant an additional edge to his or her application. I have never heard of this before. What are your thoughts?

I think 5 is probably getting to be too many, honestly. 2-3 is perfect, 4 is pushing it, and 5 is overboard, in my opinion. I haven’t seen anyone with more than three on these boards (I lurk quite a bit) and I was accepted to an incredibly competitive school with only two. I don’t think I would be worth the time or money!

Who would be crazy enough to suggest that?

Who did she represent? I have a hunch that s/he represents an entity that has a financial interest in the test preparation industry.

That is stupid… did the person work for College Board? Or a prep service that makes money off helping prepare students for the tests? My D took 3 of them (she did take 2 of those twice). Final scores:

Math II - 800
Lit - 800
Bio - 760

She just sent to two 800s to her schools. Was accepted everywhere she applied, including U of Chicago, Swarthmore, & Harvey Mudd. If I were an admissions person, I would think a person who submitted 5 scores was a little overly obessessed with testing. There are better uses of your time (additional time on ECs, AP tests, making sure your grades are top notch, etc.). Or watching Flintstones reruns… seriously.
