Numbers?

I just got wait-listed by WashU, I was wondering if anyone is aware of the number of applicant who are wait-listed each year? And, about how many are typically accepted?

Hmm your other thread has me confused now. Anyway though, WashU doesn’t release the number of students on the waitlist as far as I know (sorry). They’ll aim for a class-size of about 1400, and the last I heard yield was around 30%, so presumably (after some people are taken off the waitlist) the school will have accepted around 4,500 students. You can also get this number by combining the acceptance rate and the total number of applicants. (Correct me please if this is an inaccurate way of calculating these numbers, but it seems like it should be a good estimate.)

They’ll definitely take people off the waitlist though. Good luck :)

Don_Quixote: WashU accepts about 3800 applicants each year. I have no idea how many are waitlisted each year though, but based on the decision thread on this forum… 18000? LOL

Ok, thanks. It might be that the other 700 students (4,500 less 3,800) comes from the waitlist, then. Or my number might be completely wrong, lol :)

You have to take into account that not everyone who is offered a place on the waitlist takes one. I suspect that it is still a substantial number of people, though, and that WashU uses the waitlist to detect interest in attending (so as to increase yield).

Edit: As a sidenote, waitlist hopeful here. =)

Obviously accepting the WL offer indicates interest and at this stage of the game that is good. Also look to supplement your original application with anything positive that will make you stand out. Don’t send correspondence just for the sake of sending something. That just wastes everyone’s time and energy. Just to point out that the WL is used primarily to shape and round out the next freshman class. This means as close to 1,400 freshmen as possible and as close to the desired composition of the class as possible. As you might immagine, not the easiest task. The offer off WL will be dependent on which particular people accept the original admissions offers. Look for possible WL activity towards the end of April.
