Nursing at UNCW?

My younger sister figured out she wanted to do nursing during her first year at Virginia Tech and got into and accepted by UNCW. How is the nursing program there? I heard it was good but couldn't find any information/rankings on it. Also how is life down there in Wilmington? She will be in an apartment near Campus. We are from VA. Just curious.

You should know that the Nursing program at UNCW is a relatively new program. The program began around 1985, but has since then expanded. That said, the nursing program at UNCW is a solid program that could probably provide your sister with a lot of opportunities. I will caution you, though, that UNCW has been known to be a party school, but this has been decreasing as each incoming class.

Some great points about the program is that it’s fairly small, so you’ll know your classmates and your professors very well. The 2008 graduating class had around 90 graduates. Also, the program’s graduates have an employment rate of 93% (which is the highest among UNCW’s majors), so there will be job opportunities. One of the best parts about the Nursing program is that it’s getting [a brand new, state of the art building](http://media.www.theseahawk.org/media/storage/paper287/news/2008/10/30/News/Uncw-Breaks.Ground.For.Nursing.Building-3513753.shtml) that’s slated to open in August 2010.

Here’s a quick fact sheet about the program:http://www.uncwil.edu/son/documents/SONFactSheet.pdf

If your sister is thinking about med school, I would urge her to apply to UNC-Chapel Hill when that time comes. They have a very good program.

Wilmington is awesome. It’s a beach town, so you’ll find a lot of tourists, and people passing by, but all in all it’s a great city with many things to keep a student busy. Perhaps the best part of Wilmington is the beach. It’s where *a lot * of people hang out, and it really defines the city. I’m sure that your sister will enjoy Wilmington just as much, if not more than Blacksburg.

A friend’s daughter grad. from UNCW nursing last yr. She is now working at Duke hosp. and loves it. The BSN program at any school is pretty tough. I know because I did it.
UNCW is no exception. Nursing majors work hard.
Every kid I know who goes to Wilmington loves it there.

thanks guys, we are down there moving in my sister, she looks forward to it. Wilmington really is a nice town.

I am a nursing student on campus at UNC. So far the college is providing me with hard classes and available off campus work sites. So far so good…

UNCW also just got a huge new nursing program building where all their classes are held - the nicest on campus in my opinion - it’s a great program there!
