NW life

Hi.

I know NW is on a quarter schedule, which means midterms start third week of school. Is it really hard to get good grades in NW? How is the social life there?

Thanks

Depends on major

Good. Especially relative to peer schools.

NU’s pretty intensive overall, the sciences more so than at many top schools (this is why many pre-meds take some of their prereqs at Harvard over the summers).

The social life is decent. There’s the Greek scene, parties at frat houses but also local bars (wide selection of them but they tend to be Greek-dominated as well). Lots of club events/theater productions going on on campus every week. There’s also the bar scene in the northside of Chicago (Wrigleyville/Boystown) and Downtown, where people go to meet people from other schools. You can find a range of bars there from sports bars to wine bars to NU-owned bars to clubs and variations within each type. There are also so many other things to do in the city, but most stay on campus for the most part since there’s usually enough interesting stuff going on there.

My son enjoys watching bands play (and also play in them too). What is the music scene like in Evanston?

cerebral - I actually liked your answer, I didn’t find it rude. You were honest and clear, what more can you ask for; especially given the ridiculousness of the question!

amtc, i hope you didnt find my question ridiculous!

The quarter system can be intense if you don’t have good time management skills. I recommend students to have a planner so that they can keep track of their assignments. The curriculum, as CerebralAssassin pointed out, is extremely diverse at NU. WCAS has a Reading Week that allows students a week to work on final projects and papers.
