NY Times Article -- "Alabama Rolls Up Money, With Tide Lifting All Boats"

Here’s a link to the APR story that SOS was referring to. It sounds like the student being interviewed was confused about whether or not there are any Jewish sororities on campus. Nonetheless, it’s a great story.

I think I have figured out why the student said there was no Jewish sorority at UA.

I looked up SDT at Wikipedia, and see that technically, it is not a Jewish sorority. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sigma_Delta_Tau However, it was founded by Jewish women who had been excluded from sororities due to religious discrimination. Also, as you can read in this article (http://www.cw.ua.edu/article/2013/11/sorority-elects-1st-black-president) from UA’s student paper, it is considered a Jewish sorority at UA. When I was there, it certainly had that designation, however unofficial.

“Although Sigma Delta Tau is a historically Jewish sorority, the organization accepts people of all colors and creeds.”

‘“We’re welcoming of any girl that wants to join our chapter and best fits our chapter,” Broda said. “We were founded by seven Jewish women because they, in 1917, couldn’t find a home. They were discriminated against. They weren’t allowed into sororities. Sigma Delta Tau nationally does not discriminate because it goes completely against our founding principles.”’

so Sigma Delta Tau has a long history at UA too - 1917.

I have found UA to be very welcoming in many respects.

Glad the APR link was shared - I only heard the story on the radio, and having the article in writing gives more complete information.

I suspect the more students and parents from other parts of the country hear about Univ of AL, the more information they may seek out - and a visit is very good verification on what the school is like - the vibe, and seeing is believing.
