I actually found this pretty worthless. The author is ranting that colleges charge a fee for putting your tuition and fees on a credit card. This somehow discriminates against middle class families. Don't most people know that the credit card companies charge the merchants (the college in this case) a fee for handling the transaction? You can pay your taxes with a credit card, but you have to pay the extra fee there, too. When you buy a dinner in a restaurant with a credit card, they include the cost of the credit card fee into their prices. There is in effect a small subsidy of those using credit cards by those paying cash, but the merchant may find it a useful marketing/cash flow tool. Should we expect the colleges to be subsidizing those who make their payments by credit cards by passing on the costs charged by credit card companies to those who pay the colleges directly?
