NYU 2008 Transfer

NYU reps are occasionally students or grad students who might be speaking about certain things other than what was mentioned.

Maybe, I will receive a rejection letter soon..:(...I will tell you guys if they mention acceptance rate.

By the way, if someone is a junior transfer, are high school gpa and sat still important??

they review your whole academic record including High school, but place the most importance on your college record.

I am getting a little scared when people keep mentioning that it is hard to transfer without a 4.0 GPA in college... does it matter WHAT college you go to? If you transfer from a UC and have a lower GPA, is it different than transferring from a community college with a high GPA?

I was recently accepted to schools like Columbia and Stanford, but none of my top choices gave me enough financial aid. Unfortunately, I’m in a position where I think I need to attend a UC this year in order to save money. I wish I had applied to a broader range of private schools, and ones that would be more likely to offer aid.

Having said that, I am looking at transferring to certain schools for my sophomore year of college (I will be starting my freshman year this fall).

I want to narrow down my list, but I don't want to make the same mistake I did this year of just picking top schools and either getting wait-listed or getting in and not getting money. So, I was wondering what schools are most likely going to accept me as a transfer. I appreciate constructive criticism, but please don't take out angry emotions about not getting in on me. I would fully appreciate what honest and truthful information I can be given.

I also wanted to know if I should take the SAT again and whether transfer schools look at SAT IIs. And do they put more of an emphasis on high school GPA and work or first year of college GPA/work?

H.S. GPA: 3.66 (unweighted), 4.1-4.2 (weighted)
SAT: V: 700, M: 640, W: 680 (1340/2020) – I’m planning on taking it again… should I?
SAT IIs: Lit: 680, math IC: 650, math IIc: 520, Biology: 500 (I know most of these are poor; I did not study or prepare at all)

I did 3 years of varsity and JV swimming, was school president for two years, did all of the honors clubs and whatnot, have great recommendations, officer positions, a lot of extracurriculars, and job internships, merit scholarships coming up…

I will be attending either UCSD or UCLA this year. How good are my chances?

topic seems to be dying down...but everyone hello i am new and have been reading along to the nyu 2007 transfer thread (lots of good advice there). I'm trying to get into NYU also.

The NYU officers came to our school a couple days ago and explained that undergrad transfer rate to NYU Stern is less than 10%; however, admissions for freshman is around a 28%.

how about to CAS?

Is Gallatin hard to transfer to? I am applying to some places in Spring 2008 and it is by far my first choice due to its program which fits me perfect.

I was thinking about NYU as a prospective transfer school when I started college. I applied for interest material and haven't heard anything for a year. Since last week, they've been sending me LOTS of stuff in the mail. IDK if I should even bother.

I'm an International Affairs major
Community college GPA: 3.7, WILL bring that up
High school GPA: 2.9
SAT Scores: LAUGHABLY LOW
Financial Aid: Will need LOTS of that, so I doubt they'll accept me since they only accept rich kids...

I'm pre-law (ironically, NYU law school is my top choice), and I have want to major in IA with a minor in Philosophy. Do I have a shot?

Same here MMoral. They just started sending things to me as well. My gpa was a 3.0 in high school and my scores were also laughably low.

Of course you should bother, why not? You never know :)

I'll be applying there for Fall '08 as a sophomore transfer. I'd like to major in English. We'll see what happens.

It's funny how they keep sending me stuff, as if I've already been accepted! "Salem, this is an important time in your life, and here's why you should choose NYU."

Lets keep this thread rolling with updated stats, choices, concerns, etc. And of course lets see some new students posting here as well.

Stats as of Fall 2007:

HS: 3.02
SATs: 1400/2400 -- As if my performance in life needs to be judged by a 5-hour test administered in a locked-up room at 8am on Saturday morning. But I guess it does, huh?
HS ECs: Piano lessons, Debs and Phils volunteer work, private art lessons, Rake Up Boise.

College GPA: 3.81 (weighted) 31 credits complete
College: Boise State - Honors College

In progress: 14 credits. Writing Center 417, English 303, History 312, History 211 (Honors), Geology 101 (Honors).

ECs: Work experience, Writing Center tutor, SWIMBA trail reporter.

Awards: Deans List -- Spring 2007.

when sending my high school transcript do i ask my high school to send it? and can i get a copy of it?

I am looking to transfer to either Gallatin or CAS for fall 2008. I am a freshman at a small liberal arts college (top 50, I believe) and I hate it. It is TOO SMALL. haha. plus, i feel the academics are not as challenging as I had hoped for.

Does anyone have any advice on what to do at your current college as a freshman to increase chances of transfer addmission? I am in a few clubs, am on my way to developing relationships with profressors, and am doing very well academically. I am shooting for a 4.0 at the end of this year (aren't we all?, haha) but I am wondering what else I should do to get in at NYU.

What is NYU looking for in a student? Ive been to NY about 7 times and am going again in October but I've only walked around NYU's some what non-existent campus. It is hard to get a feel for it.

Any suggestions? Anyone know how tough it is to get into Gallatin as a transfer?

Also, I applied as a freshman as was not accepted (not surprised). HS stats were not very good. SAT 1980/2400. GPA 3.6, great recommendations though and I graduated with 60 college credits (HS was on a CC and we took dual-credit classes. Its one of those Bill Gates Foundation Schools).

Also, if anyone wants to chat about ways to get into NYU message me!

Thanks! Good luck to all you guys!

update
current CC GPA: 4.0 while in honors program
SAT: 1290/1600 or something like that, 1930/2400 or...well you get it.
major: Econ/Math or perhaps just Econ
HS GPA: below everyone on College Confidential.
ECs: wrote/played/produced CD. Work on local election board. one club. sell original paintings. writing a childrens book.
Work: 20-25 hours a week for the past year.

current classes: Macroecon (honors) Microecon (honors) Calc II, Spanish
next semester: Prob/Stats, Accounting, Calc III, Spanish II (maybe) and Econometrics (dual enroll at University of Pittsburgh or Carnegie Mellon)

ps. got suspended from a college but had a 3.4 GPA...ha wow.

Thinking about Transferring to Stern for fall '08. College GPA is 4.0 with 31 completed credits. 18 More credits in progress. High school scores are kinda low. SAT: 1890/2400 and GPA:3.6(UN) and 4.2(W)
Tons of work experience and several school clubs.

Question: I wonder if I could get into CAS for Spring semester and then transfer to Stern for fall semester? Anybody had any experience with this before?

jc, internal transfers cannot transfer into Stern. It is a hit or miss kinda thing.

Modern, you are never allowed to see an official copy of your transcript.

Madela, I cannot say how hard it is to get in to Gallatin. According to their site they place particular emphasis on strong writers. Lets wish each other luck :)

jcfisher21, first semster college students cannot apply to CAS for spring semester. its all on the website.

i think i am going to apply to CAS now. the website says the admission rate for any given semester is between 10-15%. the website also puts a surprising emphasis on how the most competitive applicants not only had 3.7+ GPAs in college but also in HS.

What kind of courses are you guys taking? What defines a "hard course"? I know GPA is important, but course selection is just as important or maybe even more so. I am taking intro to psych, intro to soci, intermediate spanish, and a course called the iron cage of bureacracy and its discontents.

any idea about good courses to take next semester to impress NYU?
