NYU and its cost

why do people always say that NYU is soooo expensive?

its overall cost is lower than any liberal arts college, and most national private universities as well

maybe people are stupid and think its NYU is public or somthing?

NYU estimates tuition room and board and expenses to be about $45K per year. I don't know where you are from but that's expensive in my book.

Most liberal arts colleges and private unversities cost as much if not more than NYU. However, those colleges are generous with financial aid whereas NYU is not. There is truth in the rumor that NYU is notorious for stingy financial aid. Even when considering NYU alone, no easy money. Many applicants who have been accepted do not go to NYU for this reason.

How is the following breakdown not expensive? NYU is in line with many other private universities, it's just more expensive sometimes because of their financial aid packages which aren't the best. And housing in Manhattan isn't too cheap either...

NYU:
Budget Components: On-Campus Student
Tuition and fees (two semesters full-time): $31,690
Room and board: $11,440
Books and supplies: $700
Transportation: varies
Personal expenses: $1,000
Total Budget: $44,830

Harvard:
COST OF ATTENDANCE for 2005-06
Tuition $28,752
Health Services Fee $1,370
Student Services Fee $1,975
Room $5,148
Board $4,430
Subtotal - billed costs $41,675
Estimated Personal Expenses $2,675
Estimated Travel Costs $0 - $2,400
Total billed and unbilled costs $44,350 - $46,750

NYU is not very expensive at all relative to other private colleges and high schools. The cost is about the same as similar universities and is obviously more than state schools and less prestigious schools but you can't compare them to NYU. It seems people who complain about it being expensive just need something to vent about.

no abirch, NYU is not generous with financial aid. That's not a complaint. It's a fact.

lol i wouldnt care about it's cost if it actually tried to give out aid

so h20, your above statement = true

okay maybe for financial aid, but for those of us who dont qualify for F.A. NYU is the same as any other college in the country

lol if you look at it that way, then maybe yes. but even still, other colleges probably give more merit based aid to qualified applicant than NYU

amen firewalker

i think alot of people find nyu expensive because its manhattan and manhattan is $$$$$$$$$$$$$

NYU IS expensive even for those of us who expect to pay the entire bill. McGill is about $20K US per year. UMichigan OOS is about $37K per year. Is NYU a better value? I don't personally think so.

Yes. NYU does not give enough aid. I got a 19,000 dollar package and with my family being unable to put any money towards college...it is going to be hard to get the money. I am going though...I juts plan on working, selling my car and student loans if needed.

But it is true that if NYU gave out enough aid..things would be different. I'm not complaining though. I fully understand how much it is and for NYU...I am willing to find the money.

spikemom, your comparing an international college and then a public colleges to NYU... how is that a valid comparison?

spikemom, did you not see my comparison to Harvard? I only picked Harvard but it's a valid comparison for many other top tier schools. Look at Boston College, Stanford, USC, Columbia, Cornell, Emory, Northwestern, Georgetown or any other major private research university and the expenses are pretty comparable.

we can compare nyu to other private universities in new york, and you can see...

barnard:
tuition = $28,340
housing = $10,800

columbia:
tuition = $31,924
housing = $9340

eugene lang college of the new school:
tuition = $26,540
housing = $7800 (lowest)

nyu:
tuition = $31,690
housing = $11,440

nyu is more expensive than the 3 other schools by more than $2000, and the financial aid there is much worse than the other schools. i applied to barnard, nyu, and lang; lang gave me $20k in aid, barnard $15k, and nyu $0. i dont know how the heck the other schools thought i needed aid but nyu didnt.

the public cuny schools are way cheaper, even out of state. living expenses - food, entertainment, transportation - are already more expensive in new york than in most other college towns, and nyu is the most expensive college in new york. so how do you figure that nyu isn't that much money? it costs even more than an ivy league (granted that extra cost is for housing but still).

"the public cuny schools are way cheaper, even out of state"

How can you make such a comparison? The CUNYs are public schools I had never even heard of until I came to NYU and saw some sign on the subway. Same with the New School even though it's private, it's not a place most NYU people would consider. You get what you pay for.

The price of NYU is not too bad at all. As your own numbers show, NYU is very similar in price to Columbia and Barnard (within 5%). I don't buy the argument that NYU is an overly expensive school. True, some people are unsatisfied with their financial aid, but you know what you're paying before you come, and still make the choice to do so.

the original poster said nyu is cheaper than "any LAC" which clearly is not true. there probably are universities more expensive than nyu, although i can't think of any, and i agree that it's in the same ballpark as most schools of its rank. but when people say nyu is crazy expensive they are right - most top schools are, plus bad financial aid, plus high cost of living in lower manhattan, makes nyu particularly so.

the cuny schools are quite well respected though and just because you haven't heard of them doesn't mean they're not as good as nyu especially for the price. and the new school is just a different kind of education.
the fact remains that nyu, and harvard, and umich, are all crazy expensive, but their students seem to think the price is worth it.

NYU is twice as expensive as Cambridge University, UK...in terms of tuition for an american.

the theme of this board is NYU is expensive if you need financial aid

if you dont, any private university in the nation will be the same give or a take 1-2K

tuition wise NYU isnt even top 10 in the country, the room and board is what makes it expensive, but it has a prime location (would you rather the college be in some crappy part of NYC like columbia?)
