I want to go to NYU, but their undergraduate school only offers urban and architecture studies, which is listed under "dept. of art history". I'm not really into the whole fine arts/art history thing...I'm more of a math girl. so would it be possible to major in a more math-related major rather than urban/arch studies then continue with my march?
if so, what would this "more math-related major" be?

also, is a portfolio necessary for urban/arch studies @ nyu?

other schools i'm looking at are pratt, cooper, risd, northeastern.

It is possible to do an M.arch 1 without any previous architecture, meaning you could pursue math completely during undergrad--- but you would still have to apply with a portfolio to those M.arch 1 programs.- However, if you are majoring in something other than architecture then your M.arch would probably take the full 3.5 years.

Architectural engineering, I believe, encompasses both art and the science/math side of things. From what I've heard it's a bit more of the math and science (something that might interest you ) and less of the art. You might even consider civil engineering or structural engineering.

If I'm wrong please correct me :D hopefully it was somewhat helpful though

hey i got into nyu and want to be an architect so i talked with a lot of profs there. the urban studies major is more of an architectural history.. really nothing to do with the architecture i think you want. they also said only the "real geniuses" [maybe 2 of the smartest kids in the whole program] go on to grad design school for an M.Arch. this helped me in deciding on a 5 yr BArch program rather than NYU. it was pretty hard to let go of NYU.. great location and reputation. but in the end i knew i wanted to become an architect and the chances were low if i attended NYU. hope this helps.. if you're not sure about becoming an architect, go to NYU and major in math if you like it.
