NYU BA/DDS Program

Although NYU's website said I was simply a Biology major @ CAS, I opened my package to see that I was accepted to the program. I'm pretty psyched and will definitely be attending. Supposedly only 10-15 people get accepted into the program per year...Curious about the rest of you who were accepted/rejected.

I decided to start up a thread to see how many people actually got in.

GPA/SAT/Other Significant Statistics that might have helped you get in

Accepted/Rejected

Applied to other Dental Programs? If yes, please specify which program and if accepted.

Also...If anybody reading this is a current/former student of the program please post! I'm sure that many of us have questions regarding the program (I know I do).

And I'll start it off I guess.
1. GPA 91.7 in a competitive school.
2150 SAT
770/770/800 Bio/Chem/Math2
2 Dental Internships during the Summers
Scholarship to Intern @ a Lab in Tufts.
2. Since I'm starting this thread, obviously I was accepted.
3. Yes, Rejected from Lehigh/Upenn + Geneseo/Buffalo (Accepted into Lehigh, Geneseo for undergraduate though).

Overall, I think I got VERY lucky; however, I know that the studies will be hard. Slept a lot (understatement) in class in HS, better fix up my act for college.

I emailed NYU and they said I was admitted into the program, but on the website it doesn’t say that I am a biology major. It doesn’t even have a major for me. Ah I hope they didn’t make a mistake and say I was in the program if I’m really not!

Application Status
You should see that your academic plan is “Biology (JT Prog-Col of Dentistry)”. This means that you applied to the program.
However if you click admissions offer, it will only say " College of Arts and Science". Don’t fret it. If they said you made it, then you did. Congratulations!

Okay thanks for the relief! When I get my admissions letter I’m officially going to go there! For my stats: 33act, 97ish weighted gpa, 780mathii, 790 chem, a lot of music events including all-state. I didn’t have any dental experience though! Are there really only 15-20 kids in this program every year? That’s so awesome! And did the admissions letter give you more information about the program, or did it just list it as your major?

Just got the letter today! I’m just wondering if the program is worth it. You need to get over 20 on the DAT and maintain a very good gpa. I mean, if you do that elsewhere you will get into NYU dental. Does anyone else have any opinions on it?

I wouldn’t say a 3.3 GPA is a very high GPA.
The thing about programs is that if you decide to attend them, that you are basically bound to them. I would say that if you are sure you want to become a dentist, that you should go to the program. It’s a lot harder than you think to get accepted into Dental schools; it’s not like regular undergraduate. Also, you save a whole year.

On the other side, NYU dental school is VERY expensive. Also, the school itself is pretty competitive. In the end, its basically this: Do you want to save an extra year (time+money) and headache of applications (once again) or do you want the option to explore?

hey got accepted, i called as well and figured out before the letter came. PSYCHEDDD !! definitely choosing this over all the other colleges.

this is what nyu’s website said about the gpa… “minimum overall grade point average of 3.2, as well as a major GPA of at least 3.4; in addition, grades of B or higher must be earned in all courses required for the abbreviated biology major”
and i couldn’t find anything about an absolute cutting line for DATs.
1 advantage–correct me if i’m wrong- is that keeping up with the gpa would be easier than going to ivies or other better schools than nyu where its often cutthroat and competitive.
i got very, very lucky too… i still can’t believe they accept 10-15ppl.

I got accepted as well, and have decided to attend.
My stats are
98% gpa (competitive school)
2150 sat
770 math2 650 ushistory
A lot of extracurriculars, including 2 trips to south africa which ultimately made me realize I want to enter dentistry
Asian female

Is anyone else attending? :)

Wow, 4 out of 10-20 people accepted into this combined BA/ DDS program reporting here in CC NYU. Congratulations!

If you know you want to go into dentistry, this is a marvelous opportunity. NYU Dentistry has had a great reputation even before NYU the school became more prominent. It must have gotten even stronger as a program.

I agree with Obutto this takes the stress of applying to Dental Schools 3-4 years from now and eliminates the need of going through another “miserable” application process. Also, yes, dental schools are hard to get into, may be more so than medical schools because they do not accept as many students (though there obviously are fewer applicants too).

Anyway, good for you all! Enjoy your summer and your free time now, because you will likely be very busy studying starting in Fall 2011.

Haha well we got some people in this thread. I want to hear from a current student though…Need some first hand experiences to make my decision.

I’m pretty sure we need a 19 on every section of DAT (which is really hard to get, and if you do get it, you will likely get into dental schools elsewhere). I’m having a hard time believing that they only accept 10-15 kids. It sounds like they accept a lot more…

Where does it say that we have to get a 19?

And I really don’t care how many kids get into the program. Just because a program is selective does not mean its necessarily good. NYU Dental school is not the best in the world, but it satisfies me. A DDS degree is a DDS degree. My estimate is like 20 people get in, and about 50% decide to go (money issues, BA-BS/DDS programs tend to overlap in applications as well). Hell, the more the merrier.

well, I guess a 19 isn’t impossible if we study hard
I just want to know what % of students complete the program w/o dropping it.
I’m going to talk to the students in the program and ppl who went through NYU Dental this week. Any suggestions for important questions? I’ll post whatever is useful up here afterwards. So far in my list of questions I have:

Grade deflation? Inflation for science classes at NYU?
How does the curriculum work? Do I have to take courses in the summer?
What is the minimum DAT?
Are scholarships common in College of Dentistry?
Are extracurricular activities and internship needed just as the regular admissions process?
Is it basically a guarantee to the College of Dentistry, or just a “priority consideration”?

@ noproblem
That sounds amazing.
Here are some questions I have:

Can you ask them how hard the classes are?
Which year was the hardest (prob Org Chem year)?
How much sleep are they getting?
Do they suggest using AP credits or retaking the class to “inflate” our GPA’s?
How do they like the program in general?

That sounds awesome! Can you ask how hard it is to maintain a 3.4, and What percentage of people that start in the program actually got to NYU dental? Thanks!

hey, I’m meeting the ppl in the program this weekend, but I emailed nyu and got their reply!
they say that
“There are not required summer courses, although you are able to take summer courses to ease the load during the academic year.”

“there is not one specific required curriculum, rather a suggested curriculum that you will go over with your advisor during registration and orientation.”

“Provided that students meet the minimum requirements, which includes a minimum GPA, DAT score, and sucessful completion of the faculty interviews, students are able to matriculate in the College of Dentistry.”

“The requirement for the DAT is a 19. Each year, the requirement is performance at the level or above the national average, which is a 19 as of now. I hope this information is helpful!”

I also called NYU’s dental school and they said every year, about 5 to 10 students come in from the ba/dds program. when i asked for the stats of the % of who actually gets in, he said he doesnt know but as long as he’s been working there,
there wasn’t a case where ba/dds ppl didn’t make it with the required GPA and DAT.
Also he said with the minimum GPA and DAT, ur basically guaranteed although you do an interview.

and… I hear the DAT isn’t as difficult as MCATs…
I was so sure that I’ll be going here at first but I’m all confused now LOL
I guess the two risks are that IF i happened to change my mind about my career in 3 or 4 yrs I’ll be pretty much screwd& stuck as a bio major at NYU… and of course, the price.
90k… idk how long that’d take to pay back :)

Hello everyone!

Although this is my first post, I have been using college confidential for quite some time now. I’m actually a second year (sophomore) student at NYU in the BA/DDS program. I would like to congratulate everyone for being accepted to the program and encourage everyone to attend!

If you have any questions please do ask  I will try to respond but it might be difficult as this is the second wave of midterms for me.

Reading some of the discussion, I can answer a few questions. The science classes here are difficult but some are easy. Your first year which is General Chemistry I/II (with lab) and Principles of Biology I/II are pretty easy if you put work into it. Note, I would not trust what the admissions committee tells you, they tend to lie.

The hardest year is the second year. You will be taking Molecular Cell Biology I/II and Organic Chemistry I/II. This is by far the hardest science combination. Molecular Cell Biology is notoriously hard at NYU. And Organic Chemistry…yeah, it’s pretty difficult. To put it in perspective, a 60% on a test is considered to be a B.

Sleep? I average 1-2 hours a night. I wish I was kidding. I suggest AP credits. But retaking classes to boost your GPA is also recommended.

Do I like the program? Yes and no. I do not like the fact I am forced to be a Biology major because as generic as that sounds, it really isn’t. There aren’t many biology majors at NYU because of Molecular Cell Biology. It deters most students from becoming Biology majors.

How hard is it to maintain a 3.4? First year it will seem like a piece of cake…because it is (not to sound conceited). After the second year it will seem nearly impossible.

Percentage that matriculates to NYU Dental? Depends on the class. From what my adviser (and if you join, he will be yours too), Dr. Tan says in his years as adviser, about 80% matriculate per class.

Some more questions that I have seen…

Grade deflation? Inflation for science classes at NYU?
There are no grade deflations or inflations.

How does the curriculum work? Do I have to take courses in the summer?
You do not have to take summer courses. In fact, it is a norm that BA/DDS students do not take summer courses unless you do not get a B in the academic year and must retake a course.

What is the minimum DAT?
19 on the DAT is required.

Are scholarships common in College of Dentistry?
No. They are not common at all.

Are extracurricular activities and internship needed just as the regular admissions process?
You do not need any extracurricular studies if you are in the program. You are recommended to only focus on your studies.

Is it basically a guarantee to the College of Dentistry, or just a “priority consideration”?
It is not a guarantee. You are just a “priority” consideration.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ANSWERING ALL OF THOSE QUESTIONS!!!

I was also wondering if you know what the admit rate into the ba/dds program is. I’m trying to determine what would be the best nyu vs emory vs usc. I obviously want to be a dentist, but I was wondering if the prestige or emory and usc would help me out more than the ba/dds program alone.

SLYgUy2098, thank you so much!!.. I’m beginning to see the program as it is now!

I visited yesterday and tried to talk to all of the admissions committee, but i found it ridiculous that not a single one could give me how many students got in to the ba/dds program. When i talked to some freshmen, some told me 30-40 and even 100-200…o.O

so can you pls tell us how many people made it to your class, or if there is an average number?

Thanks for the information!

So…basically what you’re saying is that even if you maintain a 3.4 GPA and score a 19, that you still have a chance of not making it to dental school. I’m having second thoughts now…
