NYU CAS cinema studies & financial aid?

Hi everyone,

I was recently admitted to NYU CAS for cinema studies for EDII. MY aid package was okay, but we are appealing for me (even though I don't expect to get a lot more). I believe my family and I will be able to afford attending NYU with taking about 5k a year out in loans (my mom and I have already discussed the aid). I have found some confusion(s) between CAS cinema studies and Tisch cinema studies. CAS states that the cinema studies program is in conjunction with Tisch and when I click the major under CAS, it directs me to the Tisch course description and classes. Based off of my understanding, the course description, and other people who have posted I think that I do my required liberal arts credits under CAS the first year while being advised by Tisch advisors and then after that most of my classes are conducted by Tisch. Sooo....does this mean I am pretty much in Tisch?

Also, I read that under Tisch cinema studies I can declare a double major in film / production. However, if what I stated in the paragraph before is true, can I change my degree to film production? Since I will mostly be advised by Tisch faculty and most of my classes will be under Tisch, will it be easy to change my major? Even if I have to present a portfolio, can I have a good chance of being able to change to film production? (This is if I decide to change my major, as of right now I want to stick with cinema studies because I want to learn more about filmmaking since I haven't been able to gain much experience of it at my school even though I have been passionate about it since I was 12.I want to learn more about the aesthetics of it first).

Finally, is NYU worth the amount of money. I know I will be able to afford to attend, however the money conscience in me is skeptical about whether it is worth the money. I know I can go to DePaul in Chicago for A LOT less, but I feel like that I would get more experience and a possible better future for going to NYU. However, is it really worth it?

Thank you for having the time to read this email! I know this may sound very confusing, but if anyone can help, I would really appreciate it.

P.S- here is the link for CAS cinema studies (play around with it if you want):

Also, SORRY FOR TYPOS!

Are you saying your family can afford all cash except for $5000 or are there other loans in the package? Have you considered how expensive NYC is in terms of spending money?

It’s certainly a wonderful program. If your family can afford it only borrowing $20K over 4 years, that’s not bad, and may well be worth it if it doesn’t mean unusual sacrifice for them.

@waverly the whole aid package is a long story that I don’t want to talk about. However if I go, it will not put a burden on my finance is just that I know I have the option of going to a cheaper school, so the question is more directed to the integrity and reputation of the program I am in. Despite the fact I know I can afford it, I just want to make sure it is worth the money.

I am one of those people that don’t go to college just to go. I want to make a future for myself and I worked so hard to get into this school.

At DePaul I won’t have to take out any loans pretty much. So that’s why I mainly asked.

NYU Tisch handsdown if the difference is $20K in loans.

Ok, but can you look at my question again. I am confused if I am in Tisch or not.

I’m confused too. Certainly sounds like you take Tisch classes, which in the end is what matters. But call NYU and ak what your degree will say.
