NYU Crime Rates for International Students

Recently I have heard a lot about hate crimes and other crimes around NYU.
I am an international student so I am not so aware about these.

Can someone shed light on this? Is it really bad?

I am straight but I have heard a lot of gay being victims of hate crimes

At least around NYU and the part of Manhattan where NYU is located, crime rates are pretty low. I (a fairly small lady) have never felt unsafe walking around campus or anywhere NYU buildings are located, even at 3 in the morning or later (gotta have my late night study session bagels! ). I can’t speak to specific crime rates, though in a big city some crime is inevitable. I would actually think that hate crimes against LGBT* people would be less common here than in other large cities, especially in Manhattan, because NYC is just such an incredibly diverse place, and I’ve never heard of a hate crime happening on or near campus in the 4 years that I’ve been here

New York is the safest large city!
