NYU Dramatic Writing Portfolio - (stylistically) am I screwed?

Hi yes I know I’m making this post late and yes I know I won’t get a response til after I’ve already sent in my portfolio but one of the schools I’m applying to is NYU and I’m wondering what kinds of styles of writing they find more appealing than others? I recognize that they’re expecting something somewhat traditionalist (what with the specificity of “beginning, middle, end”) but i’m wondering HOW traditionalist? I’m a playwright and a lot of my plays are somewhat abstract, some of them are in That Format but others are just outright nonsensical. I’m wondering if my portfolio will garner interest if it’s somewhat organized but still abstract? For example: The best play out of the ones I’m sending has a recognizable progression and arc, but unrealistic situations. It’s very aware of the theatrical space and breaks the fourth wall constantly, including audience participation. Different characters are on different planes of existence, lots of poeticism, etc, etc, all that pretentious garbage. Basically: is this something they’d disregard?
this process is exhausting and i cannot wait to see the end of it

i’m gonna walk into the hudson i’m so stressed

I know the only consolation you’ll really get is in the form of an acceptance but personally I wouldn’t be too worried. I was just accepted ED I and a lot of my pieces were more experimental than traditional in nature. From talking to current students I know they’re more interested in voice than anything, however a complete violation of structure + portfolio requirements obviously wouldn’t do you any favors. I heard that they’re also more likely to accept playwrights, as a lot of people focus on screen/tv writing. Good luck!!

Cool, I applied this program this year, too. I was trying to figure out what kind of sample they were looking for…
