NYU ED1 Discussion Thread

there’s nothing that says application status…

Ok guys! Crunch time, I’m freaking out.

I’ve wanted to go to NYU forever (my mom and grandpa went there), and I’ve developed a pretty serious bias to the point that I’d be happier to get into NYU than Yale or Harvard.

SO, question for someone without bias…what schools are comparative to NYU, academically? And admissions wise?

NYU is quickly beginning to emerge as a “new ivy”. I’m applying for Pre-Law and I know that NYU is fourth in the nation for that; only behind Harvard, Yale, and Princeton. Other than that I just know the school is phenomenal lmao!

@emmajane1

My top two choices are NYU and University of Michigan… of course NYU is number one but U of Mich is not too far behind. In my opinion, I think they’re pretty similar academic/admissions-wise

@emmajane1

NYU is definitely a well respected, competitive institution. It’s not ivy caliber, but comparable to the likes of GW, BC, and USC. It’s less selective than many of it’s competitors because of it’s large size (20,000 undergrad).

are you logged in? (https://admin.portal.nyu.edu)

Do any of you have Naviance and checked to see how many people from your school got in last year out of the amount that applied?

I do. 11/29 last year, 14/34 before that, 16/39 before that, then a depressing 9/41. However, it seems most people in my school either apply to NYU for drama (our school is very good with acting and stuff like that), or Stern (it’s basically a geek school).

@nyjetsknicks
I do!
Heres the stats from my school from 2011:
Applied: 12
Admitted: 3
Enrolled: 1

The average GPA accepted for kids from my school is 93.74 weighted. How about yours?

I feel like NYU hates my school :frowning: They never visit. And my school is really competitive, its one of the most competitive public schools in my state. Weird…

@nyjetsknicks
We use it too. Last year was 12/17. Our ave. GPA is a 3.8 weighted.

Thanks for posting, it’s interesting to see!
My school has a 4.5 GPA scale, and the NYU avg. is a 3.83.

2011 (last year) 12/39 got in
2010 11/33
2009 16/33, etc.

It says that 30% have gotten in RD, and 47% for ED (16/34)

And here’s the scatterplot for anyone interested…I just blurred my name and high school…it doesn’t really matter but whatever hahaha

That’s odd, kids at my school get in with way lower stats. The average GPA for students getting in last year was like a 3.6 and ACT average was a 28? Hmm.

Naviance has made me feel slightly better about my chances…I put in my stats and it said I have a 91% chance of getting in (those damn SATs…). For the last two years (each year), five have applied, three were accepted, and one has enrolled. The average GPA is 3.6 and mine is 3.83 (which is all right, considering I’m a B-math student) and somehow, the SATs are matched. I also put in my stats to the Princeton Review and it said NYU was a match for me. It probably doesn’t mean anything, but all of this has made me feel better (and then I come to CC and die a little inside).

Aaaah, I’m freaking out. I’m absolutely in love with NYU. I keep alternating between periods of tranquility and bouts of hysteria. Blerg. Oh well, if I don’t get in, I’m going to Bama where I’ll hopefully graduate in three years and then I’m running off with the Peace Corps.

Sorry, I had to get this off my chest…the purple pashmina I bought when I went to the Open House in October and have worn every day for the last week was blocking it.

@Zamira What state do you live in?
I live in CT, so it could be that they’re a little harder on us since they might be looking for geographical diversity.
I go to one of the top 10 public schools in CT so maybe they hold us to a higher standard or something :</p>

Haha nyu is like unheard of at my school. its one of the most competitive in my state, but last year only one person went to nyu and i think she might be the first to go there in like 4 or 5 years

Holy this thread got so active now

our naviance charts are kind of hard to trust for nyu. there’s a girl on the chart that got accepted with a much lower ACT score than me and almost the same GPA, and she applied early decision 1, but this girl “founded” an non-profit organization for a village in ghana (they went on the ellen show and everything, the main founder goes to stanford). huge hook. plus this was about five years ago.

everyone else who’s gotten accepted has a much more impressive GPA than me (3.67) but the ACT scores are around the same (31). keep in mind though, i go to a private college prep school in ohio that’s considered one of the best in the state (100% go to a 4-year college).

Yeah I don’t know…it could be.
I’m sick of speculating; I just want to know!
So many of my friends have heard back…2 just got into Georgetown today.

Sigh…
