NYU ED1 Class of 2017 Discussion Thread

This thread is for everyone applying to NYU this fall ED1! The deadline is Nov. 1st, 2012. We will know if we are going to NYU mid-december of THIS YEAR. Let’s stress over our apps together.

Feel free to post stats and what school you’re applying to. Good luck to everyone! Hope we all get in.

As for me, I'm applying to Steinhardt...to the MCC major. I'm from Connecticut.

isnt this a little early?

Maybe for some, however we are applying EARLY DECISION. Most people applying ED1 should know if they are doing so by now.
I am guessing more people will participate in this thread as we near late August and early September.

When do you plan on completing your application? I’m planning on writing out my essays this summer, but do you have any idea when the NYU supplement becomes active? And is the Common app still active on Aug. 1? I don’t think that’s right. Ahhh I’m already stressing over my app, so I definitely plan on using this VERY often haha.

HERE ARE MY STATS: ANYONE FEEL FREE TO CHANCE!

I intend on applying to either CAS or Gallatin. Most likely CAS Undecided.
ED1 regardless.

White male.
Competitive public school. #5 in Illinois.
GPA- 3.64 UW; 4.25 W
ACT- 29 with perfect writing score (LOW, I know. I get my most recent scores on Monday, so hopefully those will be higher)
Most rigorous schedule school offers.
APs: Human Geo, World History, US History, Language & Comp, Macroeconomics, Microeconomics, AB Calc, Environmental Science, Government, Literature.

Awards & Accolades:
-Editor-in-chief of our school’s nationally ranked newspaper for 2 years. (also write for yearbook)

-Numerous 1st place blue ribbon awards from the National Illinois Scholastic Press Association for journalism.

ECs:
Student Council Treasurer
National Honor Society Member
Sociedad Honoraria Hisp

Yay I plan on applying ED1 as well  If anyone would like to chance me please please please feel free!

Planning to major in some science field (probably Biology or Chemistry) on the Pre-med track at CAS
Ethnicity/Gender: White, female
High School: Small private catholic school (approx < 500 students total)
GPA: UW 3.72 W 4.2
SAT: 1970 ~ 670M 630CR 670W
Junior year schedule: Theology 3, Honors US History, Honors Chemistry, Spanish 4, Honors Pre-calculus
Senior year schedule: Theology 4, AP English, Honors Anatomy and Physiology, Honors Physics, AP Calculus

Also, for the first 3 period of school every day I am part of a scholar program at my school that allows me to be dually-enrolled at a local university my school is affiliated with.
This year I took General Psychology, Writing Skills, and Intro to World Literature. Next year I will be taking a Philosophy class and a World Cultures class and end up with 15 college credits by the time I graduate.

Clubs: Service club, Pro-life mission club, Environmental club, Junior Statesmen of America club, Animal Rights club, National Honors Society.

Other ECs: Varsity cheerleading (4 years and now serving as captain),
180+ hours of volunteer work by the time I graduate, Presidential Service award recipient, Played piano for 11 years; Paderewski Gold metal recipient, Pennsylvania Philharmonic Piano Competition finalist, Performed at Carnegie Hall twice, Outstanding Accompanist Award at a choral competition. Nominated by my principal to attend Chic-fil-a leader cast which was broadcast from Atlanta.

Work: Summer camp counselor for 2 summers, Musical Director at a Church for almost 4 years now.

Not sure what to write my essays about -_- Please chance me, NYU is my dream school!

Also, I am taking the hardest classes my school offers. AP classes are only offered to seniors and I am taking all that are offered at my school except history because I am taking that with my dual-enrollment program. Theology and languages are not offered as Honors classes so I am taking the hardest classes I can. Also, my recommendations will be good since my school is small and I know my teachers/guidance counselor well.

considering applying ED to Gallatin!
Asian Female
California
large, competitive public high school (one of top 75 in the US)
cumulative GPA - 3.5 unweighted, 3.67 weighted - upward trend and huge improvement junior year, especially 2nd semester (3.8 uw and 4.1 w)
The dent in my transcript are my Cs in math… 4 semesters in a row in just math… no other Cs on any same semester though, mostly As and Bs. Kicked up my game 2nd semester junior year with all A’s besides finishing math with a B. (stronger than the other semesters at least?)
My schedule, especially when I include my senior year, shows a clear focus on social sciences. I am very strong in history/ social science and will be taking AP Psychology, AP Econ, and AP Gov senior year
Class Rank - haven’t checked officially, but approx top 20-35%? hard to tell from my school.

SAT II : World History - 680, US History - 750
APs : World History - 5, expecting 5s on APUSH + both AP Music Theory subscores/composite for 2012
SATs and ACT unimpressive - took both only one time with absolutely no prep (and unfortunately a carefree attitude) - 1730 and 27. Doing a lot of prep over the summer to take september and october tests. Expecting at least 1900 or 2000 and 29-31.

-student government - student body secretary, class historian
-freshmen peer mentor - all 3 years possible, group leader and activities facilitator
-spirit committee (will be all 4 years) - 2 years of management positions
-film club public relations officer
-12 years piano - passed Grade 8 ABRSM exam with merit
-vocal performance - versatile in repertoire and performance experience
-music production - was invited to record tracks in professional studio, released tracks online for public download
-world percussion - this will be a large focus on my application. I am extremely passionate about percussion and especially Latin/African styles. will get a rec from my instructor. It has shown me so much about the world and I love to connect history/social movements to rhythms. I am the teaching assistant for my instructor and am currently doing a summer internship with him.

 • Film and Web Design summer '11 internship - chosen representative (out of 10) for grant proposals and presentations
 • started a tutoring program for youth immigrants from China and Hong Kong to learn English before starting school in the U.S.
 • Food Bank - approx 50 hrs total
 • Public library - approx 30 hrs total

Prom Queen… Does that even go anywhere?? I’ve heard that some people do put it on their application, but I’m wondering where. I was class nominated and voted, my school does not do campaigning

“Most Valuable Player” Award in percussion class 2012

AATI Award for Excellence in Italian - national level

common app personal statement - talk about overcoming my fear of swimming
ec essay - percussion (not sure if I should add that many people doubted me because I’m an asian girl? It might sound too cheesy, but its true…)

will have strong rec from a history teacher. I don’t know my counselor very well because my school is huge and she’s always busy. should be okay though

NYU is definitely my dream school and I’d maybe mix psychology and some sort of music/musicology together at Gallatin? not sure, but either way, I know I will be applying to Gallatin with a good reason sooner or later. I’m just not sure if it would be smarter to apply ED or RD. Of course ED %s are higher, but my senior grades won’t be shown and I think that would help (expecting at least a 3.8 uw) and I’m not sure how I measure up to other people who apply ED. But again, NYU Gallatin is my #1 choice.

(I posted this in my own thread, but posting again here :D)

@Correkid Your stats look great. The 29 ACT is nothing to worry about, it is actually the average accepted ACT score at NYU. To make matters better for you, you are a male. It is significantly easier for males to get in to NYU usually, mainly because so many more females apply. Also, you geographical location is a plus.

@sydneyread Your stats look great as well. For CAS, I believe your SATS are right on point for the accepted average. You have excellent ECs. And the college credit you are getting also looks good.

@cali1219 Your main strength is your ECs, they are great. Your GPA is considerably low, but because it has an upward trend, that helps. I am in the same boat with you for the ACT (I’m not going to take the SAT) I am hoping that after I take the September ACT I can get at least a 29, preferably 30/31. I think your chances are good if you apply early. Also, I have heard that Gallatin is easier to get into than CAS. Not completely sure though

I feel weird chancing people…lol
I don’t feel like writing out my entire resume on here…I still have to make one of those actually.
Basically, I come from a very, VERY competitive public high school in CT, I’m a white female. My I will graduate HS with 6 AP courses. My GPA is well above NYU’s accepted. MY test scores (ACT) are not, and I am trying all I can this summer to prep. In September I will take the ACT one last time, aiming for a 30.
I have 300+ volunteer hours, my ECs look good as well.
I may post my stats in more detail once I make my own resume.

And also, I am so lost with this common app thing. I signed up last week…which I probably shouldn’t have, right? Or does it not matter. I have no idea when the NYU supplement comes out either but I want to roughly finish the entire app for NYU by early september, and then make changes here and there…I’ll probably submit my entire app mid-october, not that it really matters when.
Also, I’m really stressing out. I feel like simple odds are against me getting in. My geographical location is not good, and I’m a white girl. Ugh

ED to Stern but i doubt i will get in

I know NYU looks mainly at UW GPA, but since mine is a little below average at a 3.64, will they at least take my W GPA into consideration since it is much higher at 4.25 due to all of my honors and AP classes?

@correkid Definitely. My school only does weighted…
Does your school use Naviance?

@nyu427 Yes! I love Naviance! Although, since I’m from Chicago, only a handful of people from school have applied in the last four or so years, so whenever I use the graph feature, it scares me so much because my circle usually falls right in an X, meaning that someone with my same stats got rejected. Ahhh!

But yeah, Naviance is an awesome tool that I love using, most of the time just to freak myself out, but still. Do you use it?

A 3.64 is basically a 3.7 do not stress over little things. When I applied last year my GPA was a 3.59 and I was accepted to CAS. I know how stressful of a time it can be but your grades up to this point cannot be changed right now you should be focused on getting your test scores as high as you possibly can and writing an incredible personal statement for the common app.

@aarcot what did you get on your ACT/SAT. I got my last test scores back today and the highest I got is a 29. I’m staying with that score. Here is the. Breakdown of my scores:
English- 33
Math- 29
Reading- 26
Science- 29
Writing- 11
Are these even good enough??
Also, I’ve contacted two admissions officers and they said that NYU does NOT superscore the ACT. Can anyone verify this??

@Correkid I got my ACTs back today too! My composite was a 28. My English score basically brought up my other not so good scores…
Ahhhh My science score is awful. I’m taking this test one last time in September, and I’m sure I’ll be able to bring my score up, mainly being that since English was the only one I studied for and got an amazing score.
And I’m pretty sure NYU does NOT superscore the ACT, sadly.
Also, I use Naviance all the time! I’ll take a screenshot of the applied/accepted kids from my school

this is the acceptance history from my school. http://i46.■■■■■■■.com/2w52drc.png

As I probably mentioned earlier, my GPA is well above the accepted average for NYU in general and the kids at my school (very competitive public school)
It is just my ACT scores that are a little low. A 28 composite will get you in the door, but barely. At least thats what I heard

@nyu427 yikes, that screenshot is not too comforting! Haha. I got a 30 on my ACT in april, but my school did not offer the writing portion, so unfortunately I am not able to use it. I had a 35 on English and and 34 on math, but then a 22 on reading. I’m really mad I can’t use that 30 tho cuz there’s no writing! So I’m stuck with my 29 and I’m not taking it in Sept. Ugh! I’m really starting to feel like I will not be able to get in.

@correkid I honestly think you will, based on your stats and just everything you have going for you- you have a lot in your favor. A 29 ACT is good, thats the average accepted ACT score there.
Also, I think since my school is in Connecticut, it is harder to get in. They want a wider range of geographical locations.
I honestly think you have a really good chance!
