Is it absolutely ridiculous to apply to the Tisch Film & TV program as a transfer student if I have very little experience in the field? I’ve taken four cinema classes at the community college I’m currently at, including a film production class in which I made two very basic student films. I am very passionate about filmmaking and knowledgeable about film history, I just haven’t really had the opportunity to practice making them because of equipment, etc. I know that Tisch is super selective and if I don’t really have much experience, will that hinder my chances of being accepted? Am I better off applying to a different program?
No, plenty of students go into Tisch film with little experience in film. At the end of the day why would you waste over a quarter of a million dollars on going to school for film if you already had the experience? As I’m sure you know, you’ll need to submit a portfolio, but there are options that aren’t a completed film. They’re looking for potential and signs of commitment, not the finished product.
There are also plenty of students from community colleges that transfer into Tisch film.
Applying to a different program won’t help you because you won’t be able to take most film classes at Tisch unless you’re enrolled in the program, and as a transfer, you won’t be able to do an internal transfer from another program unless you want to spend like 6 years in undergrad.
