I'm a first-generation college student, so my parents are just as confused as I am about this whole process. I was accepted into NYU CAS and offered $21,000 in merit aid. I was also offered a renewable private scholarship of $3000. Our EFC is $25,000. Given the school's cost of attendance, we have to pay around $33,000/year, leaving $32,000 to pay in loans after the course of four years. Is this too much? I know NYU has a reputation for being less than generous when it comes to financial aid. I always have the option of attending my state university with no loans to pay after four years, but I'm hoping that's a last resort.

If your parents can afford their $25K/year EFC without debt, I’d say that $32K in student debt is very reasonable for NYU.

Thank you, sk8rmom. I was told that average undergrad debt ranges from $20,000 to $24,000 and was advised to really consider my state school, but I’d like to avoid it if at all possible.
