NYU Financial Aid - Can I get this?

Okay, so NYU is my dream school and I plan on applying EDII there. The first part is getting into NYU, second part is getting the financial aid. I am hoping to get $20,000 a year in aid from NYU (excluding loans, it can include work / study). Does this sound possible?

My Stats:
EFC: $5,000
ACT: 28
AP Scores: 4 (AP US History)
Recommendations: AMAZING (I know this because my CGO told me they were one of the bests he has ever seen).
Essays: Pretty good, I don't know how good.

This is the breakdown of what I am hoping for
NYU TOTAL COST: $52,000 (thats with the Dorm package that is like $7,000 a year)
NYU Aid: -$20,000 (per year, crossing my fingers!!!)
Loans: -$10,000 (per year)
Outside Scholarships: -$5,000 (per year, I can try and get more)
Work / Study: TBD
The rest: to be paid by my mom.

P.S: I plan on applying to CAS, however I am considering Gallatin & Steinhardt, which will give me better aid? THANKS!!!

............also, please reply only about things related and strictly about this post!

Not likey…sorry.

NYU’s aid is often merit-based…even for those with need. That means that they give their money to those with high stats. NYU is AWFUL with aid…especially to those with good, but not top stats.

Have you asked how much your mom CAN pay? with an EFC of $5k, her income doesn’t sound very high. Ask her!

It’s not likely that you’re going to get $5k PER YEAR in outside scholarships. Outside scholarships are very hard to get, and usually ONLY for FRESHMAN year. You wouldn’t likely have those same scholarship opportunities for years 2, 3 and 4.

Your student loans will be $5500 for frosh year. Don’t know if you MIGHT get some Perkins loan…maybe…if you do, it may only be for about 1500. So, you won’t have 10k in loans.

I think NYU’s Room and Board is a LOT MORE than $7k per year…I think it’s well over $10k…but I could be wrong. Are you looking at YEARLY cost or SEMESTER cost. Check again!!!

NYU’s annual cost is about $60k, so you might be looking at the semester cost for housing.

can you provide a link?

With your stats, I don’t think you can expect better aid at any of the NYU colleges.

*The rest: to be paid by my mom.
*

??? Right now, your mom’s portion is about $20k+ per year. That doesn’t sound possible for her. It may be higher if you have R&B wrong.

Where else are you applying? It’s doubtful that NYU will be affordable.

edit…

Oh my…you have to pay a 1000 housing fee? Yikes! Is this in addition to housing costs?

*Freshmen and Transfer students must pay a $1000 reservation fee in early June to secure housing reservations.

http://www.nyu.edu/content/dam/nyu/resLifeHousServ/documents/2011-2012-Housing-Rates.pdf

The rates are more than $7k per year. And they seem to only cover 10 meals per week…so you’d need to buy your weekend food with other funds.

Are you still NA? You never know around here if the hooks are for real. I’d say being NA would make possible to get the $20K. If not, see above!

NYU was one of my top choice schools as well, and then I realized how ridiculously stingy they are with financial aid, and crossed them off my list. Of all the top 50 schools, they may very well be the worst financial aid school. There are so many other options that are at least as good and far cheaper.

I am technically NA, however I do not have my tribe number. Is there a blood testing I can do to prove it? Anyways what we did about the NA thing on the common app is, we did not put a tribe number, but my mom uploaded a legal document saying the reason we cannot get the tribe number is because my biological father cannot contact me due to a court order, so there is no way to get the number from him. However, is there is blood testing to prove my NA, I would do it in a heart beat!

Thank you mom2collegekids for responding to my posts and being so helpful. I am glad that you can give me a realistic approach to this. Even though my chances for getting the aid I want are diminutive, I am still hoping for the best. I remember in a post before you said something about NA blood papers? When you say that, do you mean that there is blood testing to prove I am Native American? I know 100% I am Native American but I do not have the tribe number. Anyways what we did about the NA thing on the common app is, we did not put a tribe number, but my mom uploaded a legal statement saying that the reason we cannot get the tribe number is because my biological father cannot contact me due to a court order, so there is no way to get the number from him. However, if there is blood testing to prove my NA, I would do it in a heart beat!

Coe levee seeking NA’s are really looking for those who’ve lived in the culture. They are not looking for technicalities.

NA tribal enrollment does not require “getting a number” from your father. You have to apply thru the tribal office of whichever tribe your parent is an enrolled member. You will have to submit documents–usually a birth certificate plus a genealogy demonstrating your parent’s ancestor was on the tribal membership rolls at certain point that is determined by the tribal constitution. (Many use the BIA censuses from the late 1880’s.)

Alternatively, you can apply for certification of tribal affiliation thru the BIA. This too will require a detailed genealogy and a birth certificate.

Usually each tribe has its own genealogical records and can recommend a certified Native American genealogist to you who can assist you in preparing the genealogy portion of the application.

Blood/genetic testing of any kind are not acceptable alternatives.

BTW, if your 100% NA–are you eligible for tribal enrollment thru your mother’s side? Or is she not a tribal member?

Here’s a place to start researching how to apply for tribal affiliation:

http://www.doi.gov/tribes/enrollment.cfm

One thing the articles mentions is that most tribes require, besides the genealogy, is residency on the reservation AND continuing contact with and cultural participation in the tribe. If you’ve never been to your dad’s rez, learned the language or gained familiarity with the cultural and religious practices, you’re very likely not going to qualify for membership.

*we cannot get the tribe number is because my biological father cannot contact me due to a court order, so there is no way to get the number from him. However, is there is blood testing to prove my NA, I would do it in a heart beat! *

I don’t think there is a blood test.

Is there anyone in your father’s family that can be contacted to get this info?
That said, maybe they are looking for students who were raised in the culture…I don’t know.

Just because your Bio dad can’t directly contact you doesn’t mean that you can’t get the info in some kind of roundabout way. If your mom were to contact one of your dad’s siblings, that sibling could get the info from your dad, and then the sibling could tell your mom…or something like that. Do you have any contact with any of your dad’s relatives? Grandparents?

In the meantime, you need to prepare that this school may not be affordable…even if NYU were to throw $15-20k at you for being NA.

The cost is $60k (and rising every year). With a typical student loan and work study and maybe $20k for being NA, that would still leave your mom with about $20k per year to pay. It doesn’t sound like she earns enough to pay that much…she has an EFC of about $5k.

Where else are you applying?

What are your financial safety schools?

What state are you in?

Here are the flaws that I see in your thinking:

Your stats do not put you in the range for big $ at NYU.

The most you can borrow as a freshman through the stafford loan program is $5500 (3500 subsidized + 2000 unsubsidized). IF your mom is not eligible for a PLUS loan, you can get another 2k, bringing your unsub loan to 4,000.

If your eligible for an unsub loan of $4,000, it would not be a stretch to say, that your mom does not have the money to pay the balance and and is not in a position to borrow it.

Unless you already have some named outside scholarship that is going to guarantee you 5k a year for 4 years, the chances of your finding one is not going to be that great.

thread in the parents forum from another student thinking about EDII with responses from NYU parents

Its stupid to apply NYU ED with your financial situation. Even if you got admitted, the FA package will be mostly loans, not grants. Also, the actual cost of attending NYU is likely more than the published 60K/year, because its NYC and the temptation to spend money outside of your three square meals is very strong.

What is rest of your stats?

My DD with ACT 34 applied to NYU RD and got in and all we’ve got in FA is loans. Our financial situation is different from yours. But I urge you to apply NYU RD and compare FA packages.
