NYU Gallatin vs. Wesleyan

Hey all!

NYU Gallatin and Wesleyan are different schools, yet I like them both and I'm having the hardest time trying to list the pros and cons of the two.... college decisions are horrid. And that's where CC comes in -- hopefully someone else here is having a similar dilemma and can share what they've come up with :)

I love NYC -- not just "oh, this is nice" but I mean I have serious LOVE for it. In addition, NYC has the best opportunities for an art-oriented student (studio art/fashion/media), and the internships available to NYU students would be an invaluable part of my undergraduate education. The student body at NYU has always been an attraction for me since I visited last year, and the lack-of-campus-atmosphere (as some people describe it) is definitely not a drawback in my mind.

That said, there's a reason I chose Gallatin and not an NYC art school/Stein. I figure that, if I truly want to continue with art even after undergraduate studies, then I will go to an art school for Graduate school -- I have this fear of setting myself short before I try out everything I possibly can. However, I have no idea how Gallatin students are treated in the business/art world, because our majors are all individual and somewhat piecemeal...

Wesleyan on the other hand has great academics, a very liberal and outspoken student body, and a great campus. However, the whole idea of being in a residential town for four years of my life kind of freaks me out -- sure, there's tons to do ON campus, but I'm looking forward to using what I learn during my undergraduate studies (before I graduate) in the real world (through internships for example) which, unfortunately, quaint little Middletown doesn't really offer.

Bah, im so confused.... thanks for reading this, and if you could offer any insight I'd be so, so grateful :P

well from your description of wesleyan, it sounds like you're already set on NYU...

then go to NYU...

I agree with micheeatsfish. You sound like you'd do much better at NYU.

Yea, I didn't follow this thread too carefully because, truthfully, I don't know that much about NYU/Gallatin. And, the whole big city versus small, residential LAC dichotomy is certainly a real one.

But, the notion that Wesleyan internships are limited to Middletown strikes me as a little bizarre; New York City is full of Wesleyan alum working in the arts. Take a look at this CRC site for a better idea of what's available beyond Middletown:
<a href="http://www.wesleyan.edu/crc/explore/majors/links/art.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.wesleyan.edu/crc/explore/majors/links/art.html</a></p>

Although Gallatin lacks the small residential campus, you will find that we are an incredibly tigh knit community within NYU, some say we're like a cult! What are you interested in studying? If you're serious about design, then NYU is probably the place to be.

I had a tough time picking NYU over a scholarship to car design school in detroit. So in my 'design' dilemma, I'd've been better off in detroit where the big three are.
