I am recently admitted by NYU, the GLS program. Anyone being admitted to the same program, please share more information! Any threads would be appreciated!!!
GLSP requires your freshman year at one of their global campuses, then the next one in NYC. After those two years of what they call “The Core Program”, you have the option to continue and major in GLS or to transfer to a major within (I believe) CAS, Tisch, or Gallatin. So, my course will be year one in London and year 2 in NYC under the Core Program, then transferring to Journalism at CAS for the next two. I hope this helps! I was worried about this when I wasn’t accepted into journalism right away, but now I’m excited!
Where are NYU’s facilites overseas? I live in London and many American universities literally rent space in office buildings. There is no sort of community feeling and you don’t have rights or access to local universities (i.e. University of London). As a result, many students have to use public libraries etc. Don’t know what it is like in Florence.
Hi nyorbust! Thanks for your help. Since I am more interested in econ/finance, I wonder if I have the chance transferring to stern onwards junior year? Any requirements transferring to other colleges?
I was accepted to GLS as well but don’t have any information on where I’m supposed to be for my first year… Where did you guys find that?
you are NOT required to spend your freshman year abroad. Read your acceptance letter, it says NYC campus OR overseas campus.
Hi fourfourfour, your acceptance letter informs you where you should spend your first year. I will be in Washington Square as freshman. What about you? Hope we are in the same campus!!
Here is a great article about life as an NYU London student. http://kirramagazine.com/a-visitors-guide-to-london/ Also, my daughter is in the NYU Global Liberal Studies program. She loves it. She will be changing her major from International Relations to Philosophy and therefore will not be able to finish in the Global program - but she wouldn’t have changed anything for the world. When you are admitted to NYU in the “Global Program” you are actually in the Core Program. In the end of your freshman year or beginning of Sophomore year you choose whether to pursue a Global Liberal Studies degree (there are many areas of concentration) or to transfer to another school within NYU i.e. Gallatin, Stern, etc… It’s an amazing program.
Regarding libraries, etc. in London… NYU London is closely linked to the University of London system, you can uset their libraries, go to their events and join their societies and clubs. You cannot transfer into just any program in Stern, but you can cross-school major and have Stern on your transcript if you stay in GLS. Your acceptance letter will usually say something like, “a condition of your acceptance is that you will attend (London or Paris) for the first year…” Also, just a money head’s up… living in London is much more expensive (about $8k) over the financial allowance for NYC. However, if you have aid, scholarships, grants, Parent Loans, etc… NYU adjusts for your living expenses and increases your aid. Also, completely as a surprise, my daughter received an additional $4k scholarship weeks before classes started so don’t decide to not pursue the GLS program simply because of money. If you are trying to budget… realistically above housing… it has cost her about £20 A DAY to live. This covers food (which you have to pay for separately), transportation (Cab, Uber or Oyster card for tube/buses), clothing, personal care, laundry, books, etc. It’s not inexpensive to go there… but knowing it was £20/DAY would have been really valuable information. A lot of the nightlife (yes, parents they will go out) is free for girls and about £20 to get in for boys…so the fellas might need a bit more money. Finally, there is a fall King Arthur trip which I highly recommend, that is $225 extra and then there is the Fall break - my daughter traveled to Glasgow and Edinburgh (budget about £40/DAY with bus fare, airbnb, food, tickets, etc. There is winter break, we flew her home… $1200 RT, but many kids travel throughout Europe, then there is Spring Break for 10 days so another £40/DAY - she chose Krakow and visiting Auschwitz… then there is staying for the first month of summer for Glastonbury. Her total expenses for SCHOOL were $76,100 Freshman year. We sent an additional £600 PER MONTH (about $1000) and she’s been frugal but had a VERY good time. We were lucky and she received a lot of financial aid, but even a FULL RIDE (which she didn’t get) leaves about $10,000 in daily living expenses. I imagine ALL of the other campuses are less (except perhaps Paris) but it was worth it to us to have live, really LIVE in the UK and Europe for her Freshman year. After all, at what other point in her life would this be possible. If it makes it easier to see how this is affordable, she received a full scholarship for tuition ($36k) and scholarships/grants (NOT LOANS) for $56k of the $76k. We did take out loans for $20k and send her $10k in monthly money… but we felt the $30k was worth it for the experience. It’s a family decision… but I found it impossible to get this transparent of information when we were looking, so I hope this helps!
Hi Emtou2u! Thanks for your replying!! Its really helpful! So glad your D has such a great time in NYU. Hope I could meet her in campus!
You are so welcome!
@emtou2u thanks. So is it worth it if I decide (at the end of my two years) that I want to go into CAS? Also, I’m very interested in an International Relations Degree. Was there anything in specific I should be aware of about IR or was it just because she loved philosophy? Thanks for the help
I spoke with admissions yesterday. You do not have to spend freshman year abroad. If you stay in the GLS program, you have to spend junior year abroad. You have the choice of also spending freshman year abroad. You can start working on transferring out to CAS your sophomore year. Transferring into Stern or Tisch is very difficult, albeit not impossible, but transferring into CAS to do something like Economics or IE or to Gallatin to design your own major is a transaction which is guaranteed if that’s the path you chose. The GLS program sounds wonderful, but as an innovative program, one other institutions such as Brown and Georgetown are now copying, it also sounds like a bit of an experiment. I think it’s well worth exploring and, if it doesn;t convince you, you can always switch out to CAS. The only think to consider in such cases, as both our student friend and the admissions officer warned, is that if you know you are going to switch out, make sure to use your electives wisely so they conform to the requirements of the major you wish to switch to.
@liam16 I think it’s totally worth it if you want to go into IR. Keep in mind that IR at NYU is an honor major and you apply to get INTO it. I believe if you excel in the LSP, have above a 3.65 and take the prerequisites (for Freshman it is Micro & Macro), you would be well positioned to transfer into IR. Regarding why my D switched, she is great at math etc, but found out that the IR major at NYU is different than many majors and it is very Game Theory focused, my D is more narrative focused. With hopes of going into politics, UN work and law… she chose to switch to Philosophy with a double major in Economics and a minor in Political Science (basically reinventing the PPE program of Oxford). Hope this information helps!
Emtou2u, thanks for all your great info. My daughter will begin her first year in Florence this Fall but is undecided on a major. I was wondering if you can share some logistical info such as need to set up bank accounts, local phone/data plans, filling prescription drugs, etc. I’m worried that she will not have any electives, math or science for the first year? Will that limit her ability to transfer to something like econ major or Stern later? If she needs to fulfill any pre-requisites in math or science during Sophomore year, it will be challenging not having kept up with them for a whole year. Any difficulty for your daughter to assimilate back into the NY campus as a sophomore (socially)? Are the guidance counselors very helpful in advising possible majors and to make sure the students are on track with pre-requisites to transfer into other programs? Thanks!
.
After finishing 2 years of core program, if I don’t want to continue the GLS course, will I be guaranteed a space in other colleges of NYU? or will there be a chance that I wont be accepted anywhere else and will have to continue the GLS course? Also will I be able to chose my major in other colleges? or do I have to see whats left available?
according to what I understand, you are guranteed a spot at any school of your choice at NYU after the two years
An NYU rep just came to my high school and I asked this question. You have a spot in CAS after two years but to go to any other school you would have to do an internal transfer and apply.
Thanks for your answers
but in this case any majors in CAS will be guranteed?
