Why does it seem like so many people hate on this institution? I am not trying to defend it; conversely, I am completely clueless about the whole matter. If someone or multiple people could fill me in on why, it would be much appreciated.

LOL. I applied. I'd go maybe for Stern, but for everything else, I heard its campus very widely spread out. (ie, no central campus feel, very integrated with city life)....for me, its in NYC (like living in a concrete jungle, not very appealing to me, street lif and traffic in NYC is hectic and pretty crazy)

Um. Here is my sterotype. (Bash me All you want, I don't care, its my fair and honest opinion). Stupid girls hype it up and apply there. they are googley eyes about it and would die to go there. Atleast from my experience. Of course, Its definitely NOT a true representation of the college.

End sterotype.

Wealthy, beautiful artsy-fartsy girls from the 'burbs who want to live the fabulous city life, you mean.

It's an excellent school, best Art History and Philosophy programs in the country. A location that only a handful of schools can match. Dreadful financial aid, apparently, but their representatives are actually very patient and will work hard to make financing an NYU education work for you: they don't guarantee to meet full demonstrated need, but they somehow gave me more-or-less the same amount in grants that my top LACs did.

Stern and Tisch are top notch in their field, and limitless opportunities, both social and employment, await students who make the decision to attend NYU.

Furthermore, with a handful of good AP test scores, one can choose to graduate in around three years. And, for goodness sake, it's New York City.

It's a really great school...

PRECISELY. Thank you. Stole the words and images right out of my mouth.

Yes, based on the 10 year old NRC Rankings lol. Best History of Art program in the country. lmfao

i definetly dont hate on NYU. its an awesome school that is right for certain kind of people. really into the arts, or really smart/nerdy business person, or LOVE the city and club lifestyle? then youre perfect there and fit one of the 3typical steriotypes.

NYC is my favorite city in the country, as i grew up only 45 minutes away and am used to going there a lot. but for college i wanted something different. i REALLY wanted a campus and that traditional atmosphere with the unity and the sports.. and im not gonna lie the parties. all of that is missing/was different at NYU and that just isnt for me.

i agree that people hate becuase its EVERYONES dream school. even when they know virtually nothing about it except that its in the city. and maybe others hate it because they want to go to a program as highly regarded as stern/tisch but wish there was a campus and student unity. or many they hate the GSP program that lets "dumb kids" in with lower grades.

Count me out. To me, NYU is the USC of the East: academically overrated... without SC's championship teams ;)

It's the lack of an actual campus that makes me not interested in NYU.

^^ agreed.

But I will say that people here don't "hate" NYU, but they do acknowledge its weaknesses.

I don't think people hate NYU as an institution. It's just very different from a traditional university, so it's not a fit for everybody.

NYU Stern's facilities are crap.

I think it's mostly, as others have said, that's it's the right school for some very specific sorts of people. You have to be very independent and know what you're getting yourself into, both academically and, perhaps more importantly, socially and otherwise. A lot of people go because "it's NYC, duh", and then get homesick/lonely/can't meet people/realize they want a traditional college experience/find that everyone else is depressed and wants to transfer, so a lot of people transfer.

Honestly, imo, you can always live in NYC after graduation, but you'll never get the chance to have a college experience again. But there are people for whom it is the perfect school, because they got into Stern/Tisch and really think it will help their careers and because they're independent and know what to expect. But that's not everybody.

Plenty of really good reasons: NYU pulls some seriously nasty stuff over on its students and community - Politics as Puppetry - 3rd or 4th post down.

The Olsen twins went there.

That is why I hate NYU. LOL.

My thoughts exactly, but NYU is still a good school nonetheless.

atrophicwhisper - True, but George W. Bush went to Yale, but I have yet to see that have any affect on anyone applying.
