NYU housing question

I'm going to NYU next year as a transfer student. The letter said that the transfer dorms are Lafayette, 26th Street, University Court, Second Street, and Greenwich Hotel. What are the chances of getting a single room? Because of past experiences, I'm not really comfortable sharing a room (sharing an apartment/suite is obviously ok). Are there any floor plans online or lists of the breakdown of single/double/triple rooms in each dorm? If the chances aren't good, I don't want to put the housing deposit down, since I would choose to find my own housing over living in a double... any responses would be much appreciated!! Thanks!

Or-- if I request a dorm, which one would I have the best chance of getting a single in?

would love to know this as well (im a transfer student hoping for a single also)

To be blunt, unlikely. Singles are in short supply, and current NYU students will probably snap all of them up before transfers are placed.

If you go to the transfer student forum, I wrote a long post about transfer dorming at NYU in one of the NYU threads.

its interesting, i would have thought that because of their cost (most expensive dorms) not many students would want them

It’s New York. We’re New Yorkers. We like our private space. Lol.

I actually have a question for anyone able to answer. I’m a waitlist housing (although I am guaranteed, I’ve yet to be assigned) and wondering what I’m able to bring?

I have a 42 in plasma tv (flatscreen) and a pretty big desktop computer (tower, with 2 23 inch displays). Will this stuff fit in my dorm, or is it dependent on where I’m placed?

Anyone have any advice on anything I should bring??

the rooms vary a lot from dorm to dorm and room to room in the same dorms. however everyone is alotted a desk and a dresser giving you space to bring a computer and a tv (ie. tv on the dresser) given they are both relatively normal sized. however your aformentioned items seem a little excessive for a dorm room.

i would wait to find out what building and what room in the building before deciding what to bring. some rooms have enough space for said items and then some, and some would barely fit a laptop. once you find out where you’re living look it up on the nyunews housing guide or the wikipedia nyu housing guide and you should have a better idea. the wikipedia one even has a breakdown of the rooms (some are brief but still informative) within some of the buildings.

Check the Housing website. There’s a list of prohibited items. But I agree with CSH. Check what dorm you are in.

I have a question - if an early decision applicant and a regular decision applicant decide to room together, is the early applicant’s priority for dorming negated because of the regular applicant or is the early applicant’s priority used to determine the dorm?

I had a similar dilemma, xletsgroove, so I called the housing department, and unfortunately they said that yes, applying with a regular decision applicant cancels out early decision priority. That said, they also stressed that they DO try to take roommate requests into consideration as much as possible, and that it is not in their interest NOT to grant roommate requests, so depending on the dorm, you should be alright  Obviously, chances are higher if you go for a less popular dorm (NOT Founders or Hayden, from what I could gather).

I am in Broome Street. Anyone have any input on the desks?

Take a look at this link with pics of Hayden room furnishings and look specifically at the desks and dresser top (I think best pic may be towards the bottom of the page):

http://nyuhousing.wikispaces.com/Hayden

All room furnishings should be standard throughout the dorms.
