the choices are
water street
cliff
26th
university ct
lafayette

from what i've gathered water street is too far away and i'd probably get lost
26th is supposedly the "ghetto"

does anybody know where most 2nd year/3rd year students stay or where it would be best for a transfer student to move into?

the college I'm transferring has pretty distinct characteristics for dorms (greek dorms, asian dorms, engineering dorms etc.) - but i coudln't find any information on NYU dorms =(

All NYU dorms are socially pretty much the same (ie, not social). Water St rooms are amazing and I really doubt you'll 'get lost'; however, it is a 30 min commute by bus, which could suck.

Don't do Cliff - it's essentially the same as Water St, but it doesn't have the convenient NYU bus stop in front of the building like Water does.

26th is actually not in a bad neighborhood (I'm moving in a few months to somewhere a few blocks west), but the rooms are incredibly small - as in, can't unbunk beds small. University Court is pretty similar.

Lafayette is a good compromise - rooms aren't as nice as Water's, but they're almost as big, and it's a 20-25 min walk to campus (sounds long, but really, even the Union Square dorms that everyone thinks are amazing are a 15 min walk). Plus, there's a bus stop right in front of the dorm. However, do keep in mind that some of the bedrooms have big cutouts in the walls, so if you're unlucky, you'll lose some privacy.

A decent number of sophomores & juniors will be at all of the dorms, so don't worry about that.

In the end, it just boils down to what you care about more.

Did you get to choose your housing? I called the housing office and they said I'm on the waitlist, so I didn't need to turn in the $1000 deposit... Is this the same case for any of you?

brand, yes, there IS a way the NYU bus ride is 30 minutes. You need to plan for 30 minutes to be sure you're on time, especially in the mornings, but it's usually a little less than that.

It's probably more like 35-40 min walking, since I know for a fact campus is 25min from Lafayette (though admittedly I'm short, so maybe if you have longer legs..) and I've done the Water-Lafayette walk before. You would think the bus ride would be significantly shorter, but remember - it's NYC and traffic is awful. Also, I've heard Water St buses have a habit of breaking down.....

Of course, the other option is to get a monthly metrocard and just take the subway up.

yea it says thats its about a 30min walk from water street. i think its about 1.5-2miles to washington sq. hopefully the bus takes around 10-15min

i think i got a notice somewhere about having a housing spot reserved, though I didn't do anything to get one reserved...I just have to send in my deposit and the housing app. it seems like transfers are only allowed into certain dorms, as the nicer closer dorms to classes are taken. I'm not sure whats up if your on the "waitlist"

water st is about a 30 minute walk to campus, and most likely a 25 minute bus ride (the traffic gets annoying). you're better off walking for some exercise. i just signed up for the waitlist for a dorm but haven't even sent a deposit in. i've noticed it said there is a nonrefundable $100 application fee for the waitlist form. it didn't ask me for any credit card info or anything so should expect to pay? at this point i don't even know if i'll be going to nyu.

lol i didn't mean ghetto as in that kind. its just probably saying that the area is subpar to the other places available. from what i've heard its generally agreed that 26th street is the worst place to dorm.
