I know that NYU auditions differ from the standard college audition, with a selection of tunes being called and (prospective) students joining in to play. How exactly does this work? The audition criteria on the website is vague, and the only specific tune mentioned is Billie's Bounce. Are we just expected to have a great deal of repertoire memorized?

Trumpetdad’s son had a successful jazz audition at NYU. You should PM him.

NYU has special luncheons/info sessions in the fall for those who are interested in applying to Steinhart. Although we never went it might be helpful to go to one because then you could ask questions like this.

I will ask my son for more details the next time I see him. I do know it was a group audition and there was only one professor attending. The professor then called names and had kids join or leave as the group played. My son thought the audition was a lot of fun. He went into it in the worst mood possible. He had hardly slept at all the night before because he was sleeping at my friend’s apartment and he was not comfortable. It was a miserable February day in NYC and we had to walk several blocks from my friend’s apartment to the audition with our son’s bass in the freezing rain. All of us had wet cold feet. But our son came out smiling. One thing that helped was that he saw many kids he knew from camp programs and Jazz festivals at the audition. So he knew a pretty large number of the kids in his group.

You can also try calling NYU to find out. One thing that was a big red-flag for us before and after the NYU audition was that it was very difficult to get a hold of anyone at NYU who could answer our questions.
