NYU MBA or 2nd bachelor's degree in business

Hello CC I wanted to know is a NYU MBA worth the time and money? The alternative
in my case is a 2nd bachelor's degree. My concern with the MBA is being overqualified or undesirable. I have seen videos on YouTube from angry students looking for jobs.
Tough decisions in bad economy. Should I compete undergraduate in consumer science at the University of Houston and take GMAT for NYU MBA or transfer from the University of Houston to NYU stern undergraduate? Last option skip graduate school get 2nd bachelors degree.

I am 24 with 5 major life goals:

building a private family foundation

technology entrepreneurship

international business

traveling the world

becoming a home owner

Unless you have work experience you are not getting into NYU for their MBA. Get a job first and build up some experience. That is what makes the material you student in an MBA relevant.

I don’t know why anyone would take your technology entrepreneurship seriously if you don’t have a technical background. Besides that little hiccup, I don’t think your life goals require an MBA (or a college degree, for that matter). Also, as MSFHQsite pointed out, your’re not going to get into NYU for an MBA anyway without meaningful work experience.

If you want to accomplish something more difficult than you are letting on (such as become a member of the Explorer’s Club, build a $300 million family endowment, get invited to Davos, or own a $125 million estate) then an MBA from NYU or another top school might be a good start.

I had my own start up computer repair business that failed, owned my own music promotion business, I designed the website for my private foundation, I have done online sales, and marketing. I did a major internship with the State of Texas governor’s music office before I turned 21. I am also about to look into a grant for a technology fund. I am member of various technology entrepreneurship societies in Houston, and I am a member of the local chamber of commerce.

I am writing 5 books and one about psychopathy in business environments. I was writer at a student newspaper, TA for a English professor, digital history project, and I am minority. I have been sent offers from NYU stern’s undergraduate program and their global studies program too. I see both your views clear, but you sound like older men and I thank you for wasting time to answer my naive question. I do agree sounds like I don’t need to waste money on MBA from NYU stern if I can take care all my goals with an undergraduate degree. From the videos I have seen of NYU MBAs on youtube complaining they are overqualified or couldn’t find work because no one could really afford to hire them. I could only imagine what it would be like to be in $150,000 in debt with little to no job offers in this bad global economy. I have seen people with both the NYU MBA and Law Degree still trying to find work.

Psychopathy in business? Five books? I wouldn’t worry about an MBA, bro.

I am far from a slack i just need to find a career that will pay for my research. I dont want them phds. I just want about $60,000 salary for IT business related things and I am sold. I am beginning to think that maybe I could save myself the time and money shoot for the nyu stern undergraduate program. Thanks for the advice!

I think you might be a head-case.

I’m a little confused by your original post, so let me see if I understand:

You’re currently a “consumer science” (? is that marketing?) major at U of Houston, and you are trying to decide whether or not to apply to Stern MBA program now, transfer to their undergrad program…or get a 2nd bachelor’s degree? In what, exactly?

Off the top of my head, unless you woke up one day, realized that “consumer science” is the last thing on earth you want to study and instead want to study something completely unrelated (e.g. chemistry), then a 2nd bachelors is a waste of time.

It’s also unclear whether or not you could get into Stern’s MBA program – not until you have a bachelor’s anyway, so there’s no sense trying to figure that out now since you need a bachelor’s to apply anyway. So don’t even waste the mental energy on that now.

All things being equal, yes, a bachelor’s from NYU is more valuable than one from the U of Houston, as it has nation-wide vs. local recognition. But there are more things to consider:

Is NYU giving you a scholarship – what will the costs be vs. U of Houston?

Do you want to live in NYC after you graduate or want to live in Texas / Houston long-term? For example, you mention $60k as a target salary. While it might be easier to get to that salary level a few years post-graduation in NYC, the cost of living is also so much higher that net-net, you will probably have less in the bank at the end of the day.

Will the academics at NYU be considerably more difficult than where you are now? If so, will that make you miserable or energized?

I think it’s safe to say that buying a home in NYC is almost impossible unless you’re a VP an at i-bank, whereas in a cheaper market like Houston it’s more feasible to become a homeowner at a younger age.

I’d love to help but I’d need some more details, and also want to be sure that I understand your situation correctly.

I am “corporate communication” and minoring in “consumer science” at the university of Houston. I don’t want to sound like a victim, but I went to a corrupt d-ranked high school that didn’t really give me the prerequisite to attend a “TIER ONE” college like NYU. I went to the university of Houston -downtown first then transferred to the University of Houston - main campus that’s about to become a “tier one” university in the US & World News Ratings.

I just posted a link from abovethelaw.com about the MBA and law students complaining they cant find jobs or work because they are overqualified and its a bad economy. Infact one of the students “Chuck” i am friends with on facebook.

Answer the previous posters comments yes I feel like an “head case” because I have been lied to and sold ******** by some education conmen. I don’t understand if you cant offer any good advice why waste your brilliant mind commenting here? I am sensing that its foolish to try and get the MBA right with the profile data I got.

I am minority with interest in writing books, technology entrepreneurship. I think if I just transfer from the university of houston to NYU for stern I should be okay because from reading the forum on here it sound like i am not gifted enough to attend NYU for the MBA and I accept that.
