Hello,

I am currently a high school junior and I've been thinking of colleges lately. I've come across NYU as one of my main choices. I do have some questions that I hope someone can answer.

-How hard is it to get into music business or music technology? I currently have a 3.7 GPA (haven't taken SATs yet), played violin for almost 10 years and guitar for about 4 years. I'm hoping to major in music business or technology because I am interested in the recording engineer process (I do a bit of mixing and recording of my own material myself), but I don't believe I have the talent to purse a career in a full music performance major.

-I live in San Francisco, CA. I'm mainly looking for a school with a music business/technology major in a large city, and with a environment/city life particular to SF. NYU seems perfect, but I haven't found many other schools offering the major I want. Actually, i want to stay in California, but I may have to expand my horizons to out of state colleges (USC is also on my list). Could anyone recommend a few other colleges to look into?

What about Chapman? It's in California.

Well, the environment/city life in NYC, I would say, is extremely different from SF, based on the few days I've spent in SF in my life. SF is a lot quieter, obviously... and it's just... different.

But anyway. Music business is a joint program between Stern and Steinhardt. I don't know much about it, but Stern is a bit more competitive than Steinhardt, and I'm not sure which school to apply to (I know Stern has the major, but I'm not sure if there's a slightly more music, rather than business, slanted version in Steinhardt). Yeah... so I'm not much help, but it's a start. Stern is stats/scores oriented, so a high GPA/SAT are definitely something you need for that. Steinhardt, on the other hand, tends to look at other factors (like ECs/essays), I would think.

Thanks for the input so far. Any other responses?

Music business and music technology are both in Steinhardt.

You should be able to explore each program by reading those pages. Contact info is there, if you have questions which aren't answered. Both programs have an audition as part of the admissions process. You can find the audition requirements on the respective websites, as well as detailed descriptions of their respective curriculum. Both programs have an extensive music core curriculum.
