what's the average GPA for transfers to get into NYU, Northwestern, or Boston U?
Northwestern I won't get in to, but it's number one in the country for journalism
so I still want to at least try...

Here's my info:

Major: English and Journalism
Type: Transfer from cali. cc
GPA: I will have a 3.3 by the time I apply. Deadlines isn't until around April luckily.
EC's: -editor of cc newspaper
-interned (15 hours a week) for 3 months at local city's newspaper
-interning for local city's magazine (15 h/week) 4 months and going
-president of photography club in h.s.,
-photo editor of h.s. yearbook,
-historian for Student Task Force h.s. club,
-three year choir member in h.s.,
-added up all my hours and it's about 850 EC hours.

plus, I don't know if this helps but I've been taking college courses at my cc since I was a sophomore in h.s.

PS Statement: My statements for my UC app were really creative, standouts. Risky almost. And I'm thinking I'm going to use the same ones, but make them even better.

Do I have a shot at any of these???? Northwestern I know is most likely not going to accept me, like I said, but what about NYU???? I don't know what the statistics are for NYU transfer acceptances...

Financial aid is limited for transfer students & BU & NYU are not noted for giving out much financial aid. Could your family afford to send you to BU & NYU if you were accepted?

@SLUMOM, I heard they don’t give out much financial aid, but I think we can cover it. It’s just me going to school, so yes. Do you know what the average GPA is for transfers to NYU or BU?

To be a competitive applicant you need at least a 3.5. Your EC’s are great but your grades matter a lot more. I don’t know how many college credits you have completed so far but if you have less than 30 credits then the colleges will put much weight on your high school record. I believe northwestern and Boston University requires SAT scores for transfer students.

Why do you want to out of state and attend really expensive schools?
There are many good universities where you live and they are much cheaper
(UC Berkeley, San Diego, San Francisco, Davis, Irvine)

I am from NJ and I was planning on applying to the UC’s until I saw their OOS tuition :(

@bottlecap1990 - Yeah a lot of people apply from out of state to the UC’s. They have a strong rep. However, I’m a journalism major and NU, NYU, and many other OOS schools have great J programs I am interested in, like U of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Indiana U. I’m applying to six UC’s though, but I don’t think I’ll get into the ones I want and I don’t want to settle. Irvine is the only UC that has a J program, so I’m hoping I can get into that and then I’ll stay! A lot of the UC’s have great fin. aid though! You should have still applied! Thanks for your help! :D

Jounalism in a no growth field. English is more important while building more visual skills. Plus northridge has a great jourmalism and english program and fullerton a great photojournalism program. Ive been to the campuses mentioned which r all great and desirable but u would a foolish payin oos in a pretty dead field at such cost

NU and NYU are really expensive school and hard to get into. Make sure you know exactly what you want to do and how much money you will be making. I am not saying that journalism isn’t a lucrative career but be wise about spending money for it. My advice is to get into one of the UC’s.

UNC chapel hill is a good school that isn’t too expensive as well.

I am actually a member of Phi Theta Kappa and have completed over 40+ credits majoring in chemistry. I will get my associate degree in fall 2011 and planning on transfer to a 4 year uni. My aunt lives in SF and I kind of liked it there when I visited her. I was actually planning on applying to one of the UC such as LA, SF, SD, or Berkeley. I have a 4.0 and confident that I could get into at least one of them. Money however is a big issue for me.

@krkaufman I am applying to the same schools now to transfer to! I have a 3.2 cum gpa from an Arizona university. Plenty of EC’s and work experience. What do you think my chances are now that you’ve gone through the process?
