Trying to Transfer to Northwestern

Hello. I am a current student at Syracuse University and I am looking to transfer to Northwestern. I am trying to get into Medill for Journalism. My first semester I got a 3.549 GPA. My SATs were not outstanding (1290 not including writing) but hopefully if I write good essays that will make up for that. I do not really have any ECs in college (should I write down the ECs I did in high school) but I do plan to get a job this semester soon. What chances do you think I have of getting in. Also, I will not have my spring semester grades by the time I apply, do they accept those after the deadline?

what is your hs gpa? your hs gpa will matter more than one semester of college

they will not accept spring grades after the deadline, they will have made their decision by then. the most they will do, in fairly rare circumstances, is ask for midterm grades if you have them.

without knowing your hs gpa, nothing about your application stands out. your college gpa is a bit on the lower side but i certainly dont think would disqualify you...but your sat's are also below average and not having any ec's is going to really make it tough to stand out and get in, i think

My High School GPA was a 4.39 out of 4.6 I believe (it comes out to 3.8 out of 4). I had plenty of ECs in high school, and I did do intramural soccer which I guess counts for soccer. Considering their deadline is May 1, and considering that hardly any colleges have spring semester grades out by then, you would think they would accept my spring semester grades after the deadline.

again, good chance they will already have made their decision by the time you get, send out, and they receive and place your grades with your app. standard practice. but you could have a chance.

Ok, thanks. Also, does anyone know how BUs and NYUs journalism program are? I know they won't be as good as Newhouse at Syracuse but I am not happy at SU and would like to transfer. Northwestern would be my first choice but I'm curious as to how decent NYU and BU are.

Northwestern waits until they receive your second semester grades to make a decision. I would assume they would have an idea before then. BUT they do look and they are considered. From what I've heard basically if you are in the ballpark then once they see your 2nd semester grades they send the decision immediately.

Its hard to judge your chances because your high school GPA is off the charts probably good enough to get you into Northwestern, but your college GPA might bring you down a little bit in Northwestern's eyes. I would say give it a shot at applying, it's a coin flip.

just out of curiosity, why aren’t you happy at Newhouse?
