NYU/NYC Dress !?!?

so my friend (who lives in nyc) (im out of state - suburbia basically, but not middle of cornfield suburbia)

my friend says that I will be "underdressed" at nyu/nyc because people are always on the latest fashion with expensive tastes.

i go to school in jeans/t-shirt/shorts/polo etc.
go out in nice jeans/button down etc.

i know nyc = huge variety of people and dress
but anyone know if people are a bit more "dressed" to class and what not THAN say not in the city? hopefully that makes some sense..

just curious, i've got no problem wearing what i've been wearing for the past years

Just dress in your style and your comfort. I'm sure NYU caters to all types, fashionistas, as well as every other type.

There is hardly anywhere you can't go in jeans in NYC!, unless you go to really fancy restaurant.

NYU is SO big, with SO many different types of people, that you can wear and be anything you want. That's the charm of NYU!!

Rotflmfao. "underdressed" ? What the hell is that supposed to mean?

I literally wear jeans, band shirts, and a leather jacket (during cold days) every day. Except when I'm at work, that is. Wear whatever you want to.

Haha! Underdressed? I seroiusly doubt it. Where did your friend hear that? He/she has some serious misconceptions about the city. Sure, there are people who are REALLY into fashion, but if you're not then you are most certainly not underdressed.

To answer the OP's question. People wear all different things. I wear jeans alot. I always wear jeans out. I don't go to ridiculously expensive 55+ a person restaurants too often. When I do, i dress nicer. But jeans and a tshirt is fine. People wear weird things sometimes to class (gallatin and tisch). But for the most part its what I said before. Although, people don't really wear shorts in cities like NYC (same goes for london, paris etc) its mostly jeans. Only American toursits in london, nyc, paris wear shorts.

It don't matter.

jkim251: Your friend sounds like a pompous idiot. The glorious thing about New York is, you can wear anything and no one is going to look twice.

"your friend sounds like a pompous idiot"

well not really an idiot, but definitely pompous..and loud..did i mention loud?

yes this is what I thought...he is quite arrogant though - claims its because hes a new yorker lol. hm, i did not know that people in the city don't usually wear shorts, thats news =)

I don't really agree with the shorts thing. I work in NY and I see non-touristy people wearing shorts all the time. I mean, if you live in the city, and you have to go outside to, say, walk your dog on a 90 degree day, why WOULDN'T you wear shorts?

Please, PLEASE do not go walking around in 90+ degree weather in jeans. Unless that's your thing. No shorts? What kind of people are you talking to? Rotflmfao.

ummm....i wear shorts. a lot. and i've also walked to studio in my pajamas numerous times. the only person in the city who is going to really care about what you are wearing is you. wear whatever you want...

enjoy looking at the homless people who wear 5 layers no matter how hot it is!!

When I was there for my visit , I think I was overdressed. I mean not extremely but most of the students were just wearing regular t shirts, jeans and whatever kind of sneakers. I have lived within the five boroughs my entire life and I just don't like shorts but umm......in the summer almost everyone wears shorts.... I'm usually just the odd ball with extra clothes on...

Don't worry, you will be fine with whatever you wear. NYC has seen it all and even different extremes....

I usually alternate between fashionable jeans and chinos/khakis. I'm a sternie, but most people there wear lacoste polos or urban outfitter type t shirts (or dress shirts since alot come from internships) Going out at night most people wear striped button downs or sports jacket, but even then you can wear jeans.

I'd never wear shorts, but I have hairy legs, so that might be why.

but ya ANYTHING goes in NYC, it matters more about your group of friends (especially since you seem to want the superficial type), or the types of girls or guys you want to sleep with, in what you can or cant wear...but strangers won't take notice to you even if you have a mohawk and 100 piercings.

NYU is huge. The kids may have expensive tastes, but I don't think everyone has the time or patience to spend half an hour a day picking their clothes and another half an hour doing their hair and makeup and all that *****. Pretty much what everyone else has said is right - it's such a big college, I'm sure it caters to people with greatly varying styles of dressing.

just to clarify a bit (what my friend was mentioning - read my OP)

my friend said i would feel "underdressed" in nyc not specifically at nyu.

that being said, i think he meant since i'm from the suburbs of IL (near chicago mind you - not the cornfields), i woudl find it different in a city like nyc.

just as people in cali wear different things than people on the east coast

i think though (as its been thoroughly discussed), it doesn't really matter what you wear. I guess i'll meet people like me and people who dress "better" than me =)
